Hard to figure what he gets on a 1 year deal.

2.2 or so?

I really like this player. Hope he lights it up and commands a huge raise out of SJ

Needs to be traded to the Canadiens so he can be Labanc of Montreal.

Yeah, I went there.

One would have to think that this is the year that SJ needs to win. For 2020/21 they have ten players under contract and only $20 m of cap space. $53 m of their salary for next year is tied up by seven players, four of which will be over 30-years-old, and they will once again need to work out an RFA extension for a player who is a good bet to improve on his 53 points from last year.

OK...that must come with a promise of way bigger $$ after the next season to help them out under the cap this year.

Thats unreal.

This has to be turning some heads for RFA's right now, particularly those who have filed for arbitration.

As an example...Bennett has the same amount of points in his career than Labanc, but Sam has played almost 100 more games.

His agent is an idiot.

He had 56 points last season...that very well could be his career high. Some team should have been all over him with an offer sheet at $4.2M.

If he didn't want term and wanted to bet on himself...then perfect just give him 1 or 2 years at $4.2M. Only costs you a 2nd if the Sharks can't match, if they can match then at least it puts them in a tough spot.

No arbitration rights, but still no where close to his value.

Only thing I can think of is the Sharks needing cap space to finish off the roster (5M to sign three players including Thornton) and a bit of an understanding that if he does them this favour, then they will work on his long-term deal to get it signed in January with a bit of a bonus to make up for this year.

Still huge risk if he gets injured or has a down year.

Anyways enjoy arbitration with that contract now Bennett. Might not even get an NHL contract if they use this as a comparable :P

Labanc scored more points this season than Bennett scored in the last 2

If you're Labanc and you're given these two options what do you take?

Sign a 1 year, 2 million dollar contract but told it would prevent the team from signing Joe Thornton.

Sign a 1 year, 1 million dollar contract so the team can re-sign your center Joe Thornton.

Sure he's 40, but he was still a capable 50+ point player who makes his wingers better. Maybe Labanc would rather play with Thornton than some random AHL callup that could utterly screw up his production and big(ish) contract he would get next year.

Maybe I'm trying to defend a terrible contract too much but that's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Really risky for a player his age to put the team's interests ahead of his own. He easily could have negotiated and signed an offer sheet for north of this amount with another team.

Risk of injury could severely threaten future earning power. I'm guessing the NHLPA won't be thrilled with Leblanc and agent.
