2024/25 Cap Space: How to capitalize?
With only Kylington & Pelletier to re-sign, we are looking at having $15M+ in cap space next season. If we trade Markstrom, this will likely be close to $20M.
How can the Flames best capitalize on this?
In typical Flames fashion, the cap is going up by $4M next year, giving lots of teams some breathing room and reducing the value of cap space. Regardless, I am sure there are still a number of teams that will be cash strapped and may need to bury some bodies elsewhere.
Looking for some creative thoughts and speculation as to what the Flames can do to acquire some assets.

Become 3rd parties to trades next deadline and get more picks?

I'd really like to see us acquire a 1st for someone's contract and then trade that player for a 1st later on. We are owed this after the Monahan shenanigans!
Although, I think that Jon Tavares has a NMC and would flex it to keep from coming here, so we may not be able to do this with Brad

I could also see them doing this
Not convinced they'll be willing to punt next season.
I sure hope not though.

I hope they are not players on July 1st.
Call Tanev to see if he is interested in a 2 year contract, otherwise pick up the scraps afterwards. Stephenson is not a 1st line centre and we do not need another 2nd liner (we already have 3 of them).

Stephenson is close to a first line centre when given the chance. He's Vegas' first line centre for the numerous games when Eichel is out, and he does fine. He gets 60+ points playing second line now, with thsat fill in time. He'd be PPG if he had the ice time.

I'm also guessing Tyson Barrie will be Flame come July 1. I get this isn't the spirit of the thread but I think the Flames will spend rather than capitalize and take on deals for picks etc.

Try and ice a roster at around $61M (Cap Floor) and go for draft picks like what rebuilding teams have been doing. I really can't wait until Markstrom's contract comes off of the Flames.

Or they sign him on a 1 year deal, and flip him at the deadline for another asset. QB's the powerplay and get his numbers up, mentor for a guy like poirier who you hope develops into a similar type of player

They should try to get a couple guys on 1 year deals that will still have value at the deadline, then use retention slots to boost the trade return.

I don’t know about that. I think we roll with the 7 players we have right now and Gilbert likely gone unless he signs a two way deal.
Weegar - Andersson
Kylington - Miromanov/Pachal
Okhotiuk - Pachal/Miro
With Hanley as the guy that can jump in anywhere in the bottom 4, whether by injury or one of the 4 having a bad game.

I would love to see the Flames take on a couple of bad short-term contracts for draft picks.

Embrace our roles as sellers. Sign some guys to 1yr deals, pump their value, sell them at the deadline.

I am a big fan of trying to take on a cap dump that expires in 2025 if we are getting a good return with future assets.

What teams are facing major crunch next year despite of the increased cap??
-The Avalanche ($11M in cap space) for 6 forwards, 3 D & 1 G .
-The Oilers ($14M in cap space) for 6 forwards, 2 D & 1 G .
-Vegas ($8M in cap space) for 6 forwards, 1 D & 0 G .
-Florida ($22M in cap space) for 6 forwards, 4 D & 1 G .
-Tampa ($12M in cap space) for 5 forwards, 3 D & 0 G .
-Toronto ($21M in cap space) for 4 forwards, 4 D & 1 G .
Of these there will be some opportunities:
-Toronto needs a cheap #1G - could a retained Markstrom get a haul??
-Tampa wants to sign Hanifin & Stamkos - could we take someone off their hands?
-Vegas will want to re-sign Stephenson & Marchessault.
Could our excessive depth in wingers be an asset to offer cheap players to these teams?? Could retaining 50% off Mangiapane & Kuzemenko be worth a first to these competing teams to have them for the entire season??

This is the direction I want them to take too.
Teams will be feeling the cap pressure and Calgary could really capitalize and speed up their rebuild by adding more picks/prospects.
If you can find value UFAs that would agree to one year deals that could be an option too. (trade/retain)

Rasmus is a guy I think we can move at the draft before his NTC kicks in.
We have a lot of right shot defenceman now as well.
He will be 30 when is up for a new a contract, and most likely will be looking for a 8 year deal.
If we can get a young C back who is a RFA we can use our cap space on that as well.
