We should look to recoup assets for Backlund.
His best days are behind him, and you don't make a guy like that Captain now. Weegs, Andersson or Huberdeau.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Backlund's agent was on "Got Yer Back" podcast with Ryan Rishaug & Pierre LeBrun the other day. When discussing his situation the agent didn't sound much more positive than Backs did on garbage bag day.
He wants to win, we'll see what the team does etc.
Its not looking good IMO.

Maybe he will get traded to the Leafs, turn up the music, and the rest will be history.

Backlund’s at a spot where he needs to be honest with himself about the situation here.
Johnny left.
Chucky left.
Tree left.
Lindholm, Toffoli, Hanifin all 1 year from free agency.
This team certainly has momentum, and it’s catching speed…downhill.
This organization is not moving towards contending. Backlund has been a good solider, but it’s time for him to go elsewhere and take that shot at the Cup. This team doesn’t have the prospect base that is going to elevate them to anything more than what they’ve been.

Too late.
That time has passed unfortunately and I'd be happy for all to see Backlund traded to a contender now.

I could see COL as a good destination for Backlund. They’re desperate for a #2 C, and he has a manageable cap hit for next season.

What would we get back?
Losing out #1C and #3C would put us in the lottery.

And losing Lindholm and keeping Backlund might get them to the 16th pick again. I don't think the team can do much until it figures out what Lindholm wants to do

The lead up to the draft is going to be exciting.
Hopefully the finals are a sweep and we get the offseason going.

We had 1C and 3C and we were still in the lottery.

Trading Lindholm nets us a 1st, so tank away I say.

I think it depends how he views the rest of his career.
Leaving doesn't guarantee you a cup.
Staying probably guarantee's you're seen as an all time Calgary Flame player...potentially seeing your number retired at the end of your career, and you get to be a captain of this team.
Look at a guy like Iggy...I almost feel like his career legacy would probably be even more well regarded if he stayed in Calgary.

Backlund is coming up on the Fan if anyone wants to listen and over-analyze all his comments

Last year was his best season in the NHL

32 teams
17th overall is in the final
The other missed playoffs last season
Good luck picking the cup champ to join in the summer

That’s just it, stick around for a rebuild and be part of the potential push as a veteran who stuck around. Or throw a dart at the map and pray.

Yep. Plus this team had 111 points last season.
Blowing it up right now seems like a bone headed move to me.
But hey, if a bunch of the good to great players this team has are up for UFA and won't re-sign, maybe Conroy's hand is forced.

COL don’t have a lot of picks or prospects to offer. And they’re looking to move Girard to free up cap space.
I don’t think Girard is a good fit for the Flames. But the Canadiens have apparently been sniffing around. So maybe a three-way deal could be worked out.
To CGY: Jordan Harris, Owen Beck
To COL: Michael Backlund, CGY 2024 3rd
To MTL: Samuel Girard
Flames get a 22 year old 3rd pairing d-man with upside, and good (#33 OA pick) C prospect.

Umm, I'm absolutely throwing a dart at a strong playoff team/contender map over the Flames if I'm in the last few years of my NHL career.
