Default Shopping Local YYC

Given the nature of the upcoming holidays and our current situation with Covid have you started thinking about holidays shopping yet?

I’ve started this thread to help people get/share ideas to keep their purchases within Calgary and area.

My plea is that people give an honest try to keep their spending in the local economy vs defaulting to Amazon for everything.

Yes it may be more difficult but it might just make the difference for some of these companies surviving.

Did you find something cool? Post it!

Got an idea? Share it.

How you been spying something? Tell us about it.

Lastly to promote the idea on social media I’m going to start using the hashtag #IshoppedlocalYYC when I find something unique. I am asking you do the same

My buddy’s shop is always a great bet for men’s clothes but he is starting to stock more home and lifestyle goods.

If supporting local means buying a $50 candle or a $280 flannel shirt. I’ll pass all day. Yeesh

Can confirm this place is great. All my casual wear is pretty much exclusively NAQP. Kyle is a great guy as well.

Everything I've brought there over the years is still like new and stood the test of time. The quality of clothing is just so apparent the minute you put it on. I also like knowing I'm supporting a local guy who sources ethically made pieces, but then again I pay over $20 per pair of undies so maybe I'm just the out of touch bourgeoisie.

It's just stupid to pass these kinds of judgements. I don't care if you order your teeshirts $10 for 50 on Amazon. I would prefer to buy my stuff from a guy who is local, who sources them from ethical and sustainable producers, and has a nice little shop in a good neighbourhood.

You pass all day, bro.

Please consider renaming the thread to say something along the lines of your hastag and sharing of local gifts.

I do all my book shopping at Pages Kensington. Easy to use website, lots of books in stock and quick to get orders in as well. Pricing has always been the same as Amazon or maybe a buck or two more. Purchases build up an in-store credit that you can use for future purchases also. Well worth it to support local.

My son asked for a telescope for his birthday next week. I ordered from this shop in Didsbury:

I try to support bookshops whenever I can (even if it's just Chapters) Sure, Amazon is quick and easy and I've bought quite a bit from them in the past but this year I've been purposely trying to avoid them. As a book nerd, I'm already saddened by the continual loss of bookshops. Browsing books is one of my favourite things in the world to do so I do my part in trying to make sure that experience doesn't disappear completely, particularly in the current situation. Luckily for them, I have an inability to not enter a bookshop when I pass and a second inability to leave emptyhanded.

Shoutouts to Owl's Nest Books in Britannia for new books and Fair's Fair if second hand books are your thing. They have huge locations in Inglewood and across from the Chinook train station.

These prices are, in one word, bonkers.

Add Shelf Life to the bookstore list. Probably my favourite spot due to convenience, but right there with Pages and Owl's Nest in terms of great local bookshops.

Modern culture isn’t for everyone, but this shop isn’t an anomaly.

From O’Connors, Supreme Men’s, Ed Williams, to Hansons, Less17, ShopNA, Fieldstudy, Understudy, the Livery etc;

These are locally owned, clothiers that are aiming to sell quality, and make a living. Quality comes with a premium. So either follow the thread and support local, or seek value on Amazon/Dept Store/etc, and STFU.

As far as clothes go, NAQP is a really great mention. Love the store, good people, great clothes.

Other great local options include:

- Dutil Denim for (you guessed it) jeans.
- Less One Seven for the sportier high fashion.
- The Source for any skaters, boarders, or skiers in your life (clothes upstairs, gear downstairs)
- Local Laundry for Canadian made clothing by folks who actively support our community
- Friday Sock Co for... socks... but good socks, and made by good people
- Purr for women's clothing
- Also check out Gravity Pope (high end fashion) and Camp Brand for locally made men's, women, and kids clothing

Other local options for other things:
- Knifewear for great kitchen knives and gear
- Plant for... all sorts of plants and pots (some of these names really do a good job of explaining what they sell)
- Luke's Drug Mart for all sorts of random things
- REID's for stationary (pens, notebooks, other things)
- Steeling Home for everything under the sun

For more local stores and ways to support our local economy, you can check out this page which includes many of the above mentioned and many more options for anything you might be looking for this Christmas.
