The sad part is many of his followers and or believers actually believed what he said. More irresponsible preaching from an idiot who gives good ministers a bad name
I guess now this clown can ask God why he didn't save him or why he got his congregation infected.

I was listening to this debate recently between YouTube celebrity Matt Dillahunty and internet Christian apologist David Wood...
I watch A LOT of online debates, and when it comes to Christian apologetics most are pretty much the same. But what struck me about this particular one is that part of David Wood's argument for a theistic model of ethics is his own personal experience as a convicted, violent felon, and a diagnosed psychopath. Wood projects from past behaviour a caricature of atheism, but this is not what grabbed my attention in this debate.
What I found myself drawn to was Wood's conversion experience, and what we might learn from him about the relationship between psychopathy and god-belief. Not that theists are psychopaths, but rather, Are diagnosed psychopaths more or less drawn to theism?
I think it is an interesting question: a belief in higher power, submission to supernatural authority and the consequences of non-belief would seem to map fairly seamlessly onto a pre-existing condition which is characterized by anti-social behaviour, the absence of empathy and engrained narcissism. In other words, when I listen to David Wood it makes perfect, logical sense to me that a person like him would gravitate towards theism—especially the sort of highly organized reformed theological system that he promotes.

In Sam Harris' most recent Making Sense podcast, Yuval Noah Harari notes that religious authorities have gotten on board with science during the pandemic. Synagogues and the Wailing Wall have been closed. Mosques have been shut down. The Pope is telling the faithful not to attend church services.
I know some people love scoring points in their tribal warfare, but there aren't really points to be scored here. The great majority of religious authorities and religious people are complying with science-based pandemic measures.

my question is why are people drawn to psychopaths in theist following like enthusiasm?
Manson
Trump
Jim Jones
very short example list
I don't think there is any mystery, here. Narcissism projects confidence and blind surety. People by-and-large are easily swayed by projections of authority, and mistake these for actual leadership skill.

"Spell last month drew sharp criticism encouraged his followers to send money they’ve received from the government as part of the federal stimulus package to evangelists and missionaries, as many of his followers could be struggling financially to pay their bills."
The criticism was certainly deserved, but then again, professional clergy in thousands of churches who depend upon tithes and offerings for their own predominantly modest incomes are no doubt in serious danger of seeing their livelihoods disappearing altogether. I have good friends who are pastors and missionaries, and I sure as hell do not want to see them struggling to feed their own families and pay their bills as a result of the pandemic.
So yeah, people who can afford it would do well to continue to support their local clergy.

maybe not a mystery, I just don't understand how peoples brains work that way, I guess is the mystery to me.
Yeah, that would be fun, but I doubt it. You don't honestly think guys like this would ever cross foils with a bona-fide historian or a philologist, do you? There's a reason for that.

One can only dream of some fun in 2020 I guess. either way, you picked him and his "story" apart like a surgeon.
There are only a few people I would love to be able to help get into the "classified" area of the Vatican City secret archive for a few days, after listening to your work I would add you to that list.
—the sorry parade of charlatans like Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Paula White, and all the other prime-time Elmer Gantrys—including the son, Jerry Falwell Jr. They’re obsessed above all with sexual behavior, ignoring and subverting the core message of Christianity—humility and compassion for the downtrodden—while embracing “prosperity gospel,” which is to say the gospel of greed above all other values.
They support Republican politicians eager to gut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare and other programs designed to do what Jesus Christ strived for: the reduction of human suffering in this vale of tears. They live in multimillion-dollar mansions and fly around in private jets, while fleecing their flock for “prayer donations” guaranteed to cure incurable diseases and afflictions. They forget that Jesus Christ only lost his temper and acted violently once: when driving the money-lenders from the temple. But they are not troubled in the least by the banksters on Wall Street, who hoovered up millions from middle-class Americans, granting the 1 percent a get-out-of-jail-free card to do it all over again. Instead, these evangelists reserve the whip for gays, women who want to control their own bodies, pot smokers, and other “heretics” who are only trying to lead fulfilling lives. They actually work to increase the sum of human suffering. They are peddlers of religious snake oil.

Damn. I wish I could read the whole article. But Larry Flynt is right: the core message of Christianity in society today has been co-opted for modern bastardisations of ancient cultural tropes. The obsession with sex, or gender, or so-called "family values" are fixations on a world which no longer exists. Even the troubling doctrine of substitutionary atonement is a reflexion of the ancient Near Eastern world, and could be regarded more as cultural trappings rather than the core tenet of the Gospel. In a world of Jewish, male exclusivism the heart of Jesus's message of unfettered and universal access to the Divine is an egalitarian and progressive one. It is most unfortunate that more careful readers of scripture and history failed to promote the heart of this teaching, and instead deferred to the dim-witted hermeneutic of liberalism, which most certainly held Western culture back for centuries.
