Canadiens sign Streit
one year $700,000 deal. Is this Bergevin's message to Markov that he needs to lower his salary demand?

I think it's Bergevin's not-so-subtle message to Markov that "you're not in our plans any longer."

At $700,000 and with the Habs having everyone but Markov signed, and $8.46 million in cap space remaining, this looks like just a depth move, and not really related to Markov IMO.
I don't think anyone believes Streit is a top four defenceman. Markov is a top 4 guy.
Montreal never goes into a season with that much cap space. They will either sign Markov or get another top 4 D via trade. They aren't done with this move.

Man, if this is their middle finger to Markov that team has no one but Weber and Price.
Granted, those two probably get them to the playoffs themselves, but for how long? Has to be one of the most poorly managed teams in the league.

Alzner-Weber
Schlemko-Petry
Streit-Benn
Reasonable D corp imo depending how some of the new pieces fit. Brand new left side compared to last year

Good heavy shots, but they're too slow as a group

Call me crazy, but I don't think Alzner is better than Hamonic. I think he is a closer comparison to Stone

I think you reinforced his point... without Price, MTL is god awful. Price is to MTL what McDavid is to the Oilers.

I keep looking at montreal's lineup and I just don't get what they're trying to build or what they're identity is. Beyond a bunch of garbage and Price.

Price is part of the "Team" last i checked.
he said the "Team" would be bad.
You also have to remember that the year Price was hurt, the Habs (Condon and Scrivens) had the second worst save percentage in the NHL. The team with the worst that year? Calgary.
I don't need to remind you guys what the difference between that level of goaltending (2015-16) and league average goaltending (Cgy in 2016-17) can do for a club.
The 2015-16 Habs are a bubble playoff team with league average goaltending instead of league basement goaltending behind price. Hence why they went out and signed Montoya (after the season) and Lindgren (late in the year out of college).
For those who look at advanced stats, the 2016-17 Habs were a top 5 team in CF% and Fenwick%, they aren't as bad as you think.

They have Price, Weber and Pacioretty in their primes so I think the plan is basically to keep throwing mud around those guys and hope something sticks.

I don't think anyone would call you crazy for saying that. Fairly accurate assessment imo. I can even remember who the 3rd guy on the left side was for the Habs last year but I think Alzner, Schlemko is no worse than Markov, Beaulieu

If you remove one player from a 100+ point team and they basically become the bottom feeder of the conference, you don't have a good team. You have a bad team with one incredible player.

You missed something kind of important....
You also have to remember that the year Price was hurt, the Habs (a raw rookie in Condon and failed goalie in Scrivens) had the second worst save percentage in the NHL. The team with the worst that year? Calgary.

Its a little more than that.
Galchenyuk scored 58 points in 15-16, was on pace (minus injuries) for 60 last year.
Petry is a solid top 4 defender now that he isn't asked to be the #1 like he was in Edmonton. On the second pair, he's a good player.
They added Drouin and Alzner.
Gallagher and Lehkonen look like 2nd line wingers, Shaw can play a good role on the third line. Byron scored over 20 goals.
They have 8.5 million to spend... put Markov back on that team, and they are again competing for their division.
They realistically need two pieces a LHD (Markov) and a #1 C (who the #### knows where you get that) from being a true cup contender. Right now they are in that tier just below, not quite a cup contender but good enough to win their division.
I look around the league and realistically when a say Cup Contender, we are talking like 5 or 6 teams. They are in the tier right below that until they can get a #1 C.
