Habs sign Kulak (3 yrs, $1.85 mil AAV)

He was always buried here, and looking at our defense now, I don't think he ever would have got the opportunity he did in Montreal.

Very happy for Kulak. Absolutely deserves that raise.
He was a good player, but we knew we didn’t have room for him once we acquired Hanifin.
Kudos to Treliving for trading Kulak to a team that gave him playing time.

Was never a huge fan of Kulak here but he's done well playing with Weber in Montreal. Good for him.

Kulak wasn't going to get playing time here, so it was better to trade him for two minor league defenders than to waive him and have nothing.

He would have played a ton of games here and we wouldn’t have had to trade a 4th for Fantenberg who is worse
He cleared waivers also so he could have been kept in the AHL for depth
Treliving basically gave away depth for nothing and then decided to trade for depth at a time when depth costs a premium
Kulak proved in Montreal he is better than Prout, Fantenberg, Kylington and Stone who played 87 games combined for us, so he would have gotten plenty of ice time

Prout, yes, but he was already better than Prout. Prout was here for something else entirely. As for the other 3, probably Fantenberg, but he gets underrated around here, I thought he played some pretty good hockey after we picked him up, and I question whether he’s better than Kylington, and he’s not better than a healthy Stone, which we thought we had to start the year. Before he was moved, Prout was the only one of those guys he outplayed clearly.

Flames did Kulak a favor by dealing him to a better opportunity. Its a move that looks good with players considering to sign in Calgary or not.
Do you think Kulak would have changed our fortunes this season ?

That has not been proven at all actually. I'm not convinced he's significantly better than any of the players you mention. And I was a fan of Kulak's when he was here.

I hope this serves as an example to players and agents that the Flames are not an organization that is going to hold back young players that are ready but need an opportunity to show it, even if it means moving them.

I don’t know if he proved that necessarily but yeah, I’d rather have cheap homegrown depth defenseman, vs overpaid ones and giving up picks for other teams guys.

That's how deep the Flames depth is. Kulak was traded off to make room up the depth chart for the younger kids like Kylington and Andersson. Good for Kulak getting a good deal.
And Valiev was still a decent return.

Some of you guys...I guess if you just pay attention to the big moves that (kind of) worked and ignore all the bad moves, Treliving really is a genius!
Was trading Kulak for Taormina and Valiev good asset management for the Flames, yes or no? I'd say no. The Canadiens have done well with our cast-offs at no cost.

So free agents look at clubs that will trade them for nothing if they can't crack the roster? It's not the GM's job to find better opportunities for players in our system. What a waste of development of a solid NHL dman at a reasonable salary.
