Default Milbury fired from NBC....replaced by Babcock

Quote:
NHL analyst Mike Milbury is out at NBC after 14 years with the network. The news came on Monday as NBC unveiled its game and studio commentary lineup for the 2021 NHL season, and Milbury was conspicuously absent.

"We are grateful to Mike for all of his contributions to our coverage for 14 years," NBC Sports said in a statement. "But he will not be returning to our NHL announce team. We wish him well."

Milbury, the former Boston Bruins and New York Islanders coach and GM, was pulled from NBC's Stanley Cup playoff coverage in August after his on-air comments about players not being as distracted in the league's bubble because no women were there in the league's bubble.

Welcome our newest NBC analyst Mike "the worst person I've ever met" Babcock.

Oh you hockey players and your silly nicknames. So Mike, how did you get yours? I'm betting it is a funny story, right? It's always a funny story.

Narrator: It wasn't.

How on earth does anyone in charge make a decision like this and not understand how horrible it is?

I wonder how much Babcock cozy-ed up to some NBC executive to get the gig. The guy doesn't speak particularly well, or have a likeable personality, so to see him on the TV sounds more like he networked his way there.

Well, that's a step in the same direction.

Good Luck NBC.

Babcock is always so awkward on TV so I don't see that as his main job being a good fit

I wonder if/when Babcock resurfaces as an NHL coach again?

"Mike Babcock believes Mike Babcock will get an opportunity again, and when Mike Babcock does, Mike Babcock will be there." said Mike Babcock today.

He'll be a Brian Burke type.

Really looking forward to hearing any comments he has about the Leafs organisation or players.

Actually I wonder if he is even allowed to say anything because he is still technically under contract with the Leafs, right?

The firing of Milbury for that comment is a joke.

I would expect he has filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit.

It’s really not a joke, this isn’t the first time he’s made misogynistic comments on air. Milbury has shown a pattern of behaviour, why should he be entitled to this platform if, in using it, he continues to degrade women?

They guy has a history of controversial things. My only surprise is that it took NBC this long to move on. In a way he was our Don Cherry. An old time hockey type that just doesn't resonate with a lot of the younger crowd.

The math that networks are doing now is weighing the benefits that a commentator provides and the risks they present.
Historically - that math made sense when it came to guys like Cherry, JR, and Milbury. They drew viewers and created interest and the actual risks when they said something offensive was minimal.
But that has changed (which is good) such that the risks to the networks when something offensive is said, is no longer worth it, for the relative benefits these guys offer.

I view it as a good thing. The comment was dumb and offensive.
