Flames Flames sign Connor Zary to ELC

https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flam...ry/c-319926652

Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today the signing of their 2020 first round pick, centre Connor Zary, to an entry-level contract.

Zary is in his fourth WHL season with the Kamloops Blazers, where he netted 38 goals and added 48 assists for 86 points along with 51 penalty minutes in 57 games before being drafted in the first round (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft by Calgary. Zary is currently playing on Team Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship and has one assist in three games.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
An additional entry level slide can now apply for Zary.

If he doesn’t play 7 NHL games this year or 10 next, his ELC could essentially be four years long. In that case, team would get a free year in the AHL on his ELC in 21-22. #Flames

Wow, didn't expect him to sign before 2021. This means that the Flames will be able to assign him to Stockton in 2021-22 without burning a year off his ELC.

I seriously don't know how you post this stuff so quickly. Good grief.

Anyways, great to see it done. Thought it would be done today, but still good to see it confirmed. He's going to be a real good player.

Flames had to give performance bonuses so they could get the extra contract slide

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
#Flames sign Connor Zary to 3-year ELC with $925,000 (rookie max cap). Reportedly he received Schedule A performance bonuses for signing, which isn't something many picks in the 20s tend to get on ELCs.

Zary invited to training camp

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Hearing that Zary will be invited to #Flames training camp following the completion of the World Juniors, as well. Could end up in Stockton until the WHL season begins.

In that case I imagine Pelletier will be there, too.

I think this is pretty clearly a sign of just how much the Flames like this kid. When they dropped down twice at the Draft I believe it was always with a laser-focus on picking Zary, and only Zary. I also think this means he will be given every opportunity to make the team out of camp.

I have a feeling this ELC won't end up sliding anyway. He seems to play a very NHL-style game and this was a very hyped draft, so I think it would be disappointing if Zary didn't play 10 games in 21-22

Btw — with Zary and presumably Pelletier heading to camp, I'm curious to see which skaters aren't invited.

They now have 40 skaters under contract. Maximum they can have is 36 at camp.

We know Kinnvall isn't coming — he's staying in Sweden all year. Which other three won't be there, then?

My guesses — Kirkland, Pospisil, Tuulola.

I would think it's the opposite.

If they were that intent on picking Zary and only Zary they probably would have just taken him. It's more likely that they had a group of 4 or so players they were happy taking and because of that were ok dropping down to get more picks knowing that at least one of their preferred group would still be available when it came back to them.

3 years? Jeez... big risk for a guy with zero NHL experience

This is sarcasm

When I read the FN article today it sure seemed like Zary would (and should) wait until the new year to get the deal done. I think it was a good move by the Flames to trade the performance bonuses in order to be able to slide that extra year.

The way I understood it is if I’m his draft +2 season they could play him in the AHL while still not triggering the first year of his ELC.

Glad to have him signed and excited about both his and Pelletier’s potential

I actually think they kinda had an idea of where the other teams were leaning and took the risk.

If someone took Zary they probably had Jacob Perreault in mind as a fallback.

Exactly my thinking, yes. It seems too me that there are very few secrets and surprises between NHL GMs at the Draft. I am fairly convinced that Treliving had a pretty clear read on which players were getting picked, by whom, and when.

Pretty sure that i had read that BT, at 19, saw that they had 3 or 4 guys that they liked pretty equally, and that's why they traded down...same with the second trade down.

He never released that list of players in that grouping, obviously Zary was the highest of those remaining when they did pick. Before the draft, I was hoping for Zary, Holloway or Lapierre personally...

Good signing for the Flames and Zary regardless.

I may have missed it, but has the AHL season been announced yet?
