Should I watch S8 of the first season before starting this new one?

I didn't mind the end of the old series but it left me wanting more. You don't really need to watch it to understand the new season if you have an idea what happened.

Thanks... its been a while since the show ended.
I'll maybe read up a little again on the S 7-8 before trying to get back into it.
The trailer looks promising though - hopefully, it will have the same spirit that made it so great in the first place

I would recommend reading a recap or watching a YouTube “everything to know before the reboot” video. I’m sure even the premiere has a “previously on dexter” recap.
The last two seasons sucked. A lot. Watching them right before this new season may leave you with a bad taste in your mouth that sullies new blood.

yeah, I remember S7 as the year it lost the plot for me, which is probably why I didn't watch S8...
That said, it really was strong for the first 4-5 seasons iirc, so I am looking forward to this sequel...

I don’t think it’s necessary to watch last season to pick up this ‘new’ series.

When he finally accepted the dark passenger and Dexter was "back", it sucked me right back in, such a great show, I hope it's back for a long time.

The showrunner is promising big things.
I want it to continue indefinitely too, but you can't help but think Clyde Phillips has this season designed as a sort of big bang conclusion to rectify the last one that there might be no coming back from.

Jennifer Carpenter doesn't look like she's aged a day.

First episode was predictable, but it was also fun and entertaining. Set up some good potential season storylines with Harrison, the missing girls, and some odd supporting characters that kept popping up.
I like the new setting and having Deb as the new Harry. I also found it interesting that Dex has ingrained himself into local law enforcement just like in Miami.
I hope the writing gets a bit better as the cocaine- fueled confession from the friend seemed overly convenient. The show was at its best when Dexter did his own detective work to prove a persons guilt beyond any doubt before getting them on his table.

I hope the plot progression becomes less predictable/convenient as well. Although for an introduction episode of sorts, it did what it needed to (set the stage and get Dexter back to what he does best) and it was fun to watch. Something that made the first four seasons such a riveting ride was that you didn't know where it would go next, and the stakes always felt high. Hopefully whatever they have planned lines us up for a similar kind of crazy ride.

My only big complaint about the premiere was the acting of the cop girlfriend. Pretty interesting that she looks a lot like Deb, though...

Are all of the episodes available, or is 1 released each week?

I didn't like the first episode at all. Pretty weak for a premiere. Also, dexter seems to be a lot more sloppier or am I misremembering how neat he was in his killings.

Maybe cause he hadn't done it in like, a decade?
Feels pretty obvious. He even calls himself rusty in the dialogue.

Jim is better when he makes mistakes. Part of the problem with the later seasons is he was God-level SK.

I was struck by that as well, it's like the guy has some kind of deep-seated psychological issues.
