REPORT: Flames' AHL Affiliate Moving To Abbotsford
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=259452&l...=headlines_nhl
Quote:
According to CKNW 980AM in Vancouver, the cities new 7,500 seat facility TRADEX would be the new home of the Quad City Flames, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, for the 2009-10 season.
Abbotsford has been looking at four AHL clubs that have been on the brink.
According to sources, the city of Abbotsford is ready to offer travel subsidies and underwrite a portion of losses, if there are any at all.

I have it on very good authority (yeah, yeah, I know that's pretty weak coming from a guy who has < 10 posts, but Ill continue nonetheless) that Abbotsford may be very close to landing either an expansion or relocated AHL franchise for its new 7500 seat arena complex.
http://newera.abbotsford.ca/Page648.aspx
I also know, for fact, that Ken King was in for a tour of the new building in the past couple of weeks.
Geographicaly speaking an AHL team in the Lower Mainland dosent seem to make much sense...but this is the info I have so thought Id pass it on. And if it did happen, it would probably make more sense for the Canucks to affiliate in Abbotsford and the Flames in Winnipeg?
Anybody know when the Flames and Quad Citys affiliation contract is up?

This may well be true....I'll be interested in hearing what Sutter has to say about it. Perhaps the QC owners asked to get out of the contract.
All that aside, the AHL has to approve this....and I find it difficult to believe that the other owners will allow this to happen. The closest team in the division is Manitoba,, and that's nearly 1400 miles away. Des Moines is next closest and it's 1921 miles....Houston is the closest in the south, and that's 2550 miles from Abbotsford.
Sources may say the city of Abbotsford is ready to offer travel subsidies and underwrite a portion of losses, if there are any at all....but I can't believe the city could afford their travel costs and to subsidize the costs of the other teams that have to travel a whole day or more just to play a game!! And there sure wouldn't be any road trips to or from Abbotsford!!!

Thanks, Hoody! Good stuff in those articles!!!
Kinda funny that it's now the Times that can get interviews with Holditch and Murphy, and the Dispatch can't get a call returned! Bring back Wendlund....

Chilliwack has one and I am sure that any Abbotsford AHL team will draw from Chilliwack.

And Pronger and Peca wanted to stay in Edmonton.. just had to get a jab in too.
But yah, I agree. Honestly, too much smoke for my liking.. but I'd welcome a move to Abbotsford, there would be a following, and there are plenty of Flames fans there who would be reports etc.

It's not been officially announced and may not be announced until after the end of the season.

Makes me wish I still lived in Chilliwack... I'd go to every game.
Of course, assuming this has any legs to it.

i think this is based off that same info we debated a month or so ago. i hope they stay in qc, but understand if they were to leave. though i still think abbottsford is about the least likely place for a team to end up.

I am usually one of the biggest proponents of "where theres smoke theres fire."
But I just dont see this happening. It seems very reactionary and Sutter and King aren't typically knee-jerk reaction kind of people.
Essentially, I dont think they're going to pull out of the QC so quickly, the experiment hasnt yet run its course.
It just seems rather hasty from a pair of usually patient people.
