Default Inexpensive Gifts/Prizes for Elementary Age Kids?

Looking for advice from the CP hive mind. My wife and I are in charge of buying prizes for an elementary school aged event at a club our kids attend. Kids will get to choose, and there is quite a variety of children (kindergarten to grade 6, all genders, backgrounds, etc).

The budget is roughly $5/prize, with a bit of a range for different levels. So some at $3, some around $5-7, some $7-10 type idea.

Obviously am looking for a wide variety and stuff kids will actually like, but budget is a definite restriction as well. So far my wife found some craft kits at Michaels on clearance. Will probably do a few of the smallest Lego sets.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Dollarama is probably your best bet to be honest. Lots of random little toys, and same sort of crafts youll find at Michaels for way cheaper

Try searching on amazon. For a few years there I would order party prizes for my kids birthday party loot bags. You can get some fun toys/gifts in bulk.

I think for older grades, I am not sure how enthused they will be by really cheap toys. You might find some cool candies at one of those stores down in Kensington, if they're still open, or grab some full-sized chocolate bars.

Just personally, I'd rather they buy something they'll eat, even if its junk food, than throw away as soon as they've played with it once or twice. Plus you'll be the cool guy that bought everybody chocolate bars.

I'm definitely trying to avoid the, "plastic crap that goes right into the garbage" problem.

I'm not allowed to do food items, because the organization doesn't have food allergy information for all attendees. But I'm thinking $5/$10 gift cards for Tim's might be good? Go get a box of timbits type idea.

When I was a kid, the things that seemed to always be popular regardless of the kid were things that were functionally one thing but looked or smelled like something else. Things like those markers that smelled like fruits or erasers that were shaped like foods.

Those foam fighter plans from WW2 are always a hit and little parachute men.

Toy soldiers. They are super cheap and the male children seem to universally love them. Are you allowed to say that in 2021?

Grade 6 seems a year or two early to get wood.

Hot Wheels, Everybody loves Hot Wheels. That’s a tough budget to work with, $3 doesn’t buy d!ck all these days, other than 2 Hot Wheels.

No insult, but I think you'd want to be really careful about any kind of food item with food allergies, and kids with specific diet requirements. You might inadvertently either make a kid really sick, or exclude a kid.

How about a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle?

Are they $3-5? If so I'll take 'em!

It is definitely a tough budget.

Search for sensory toys. There are lots of fidgets and puzzle type things that kids like to play with. It may be over your budget, but you will get more than one in a package, so you could split it up.

"Fun" markers, sidewalk chalk, colouring books with "in" characters, small regular books, puzzle books, sticker sets, water writers, bubbles, water growing toys, playdough or clay, if you can find lego at that price, it's always a hit.

Do they still make those Styrofoam airplanes that you put a penny in the nose and it has a rubber band engine.

I used to love those when I was a kid.
