Audiophile help! Hooking up speakers and sub

So I have my old favorite speaker system that I want to hook up, the trick is that my 2 fronts have 2 passive subs in them along with the tweeters. I have to bridge this with my connection on the back of my Yamaha receiver so I was wondering how I would do that.

The pictures below are the one right speaker, 33/34 are the tweeter, 43/44 is the unpowered sub in the same speaker. Also included is my connections on the back of the receiver.

Seems like to daisy chain this would be not the ideal situation, maybe just buy a separate cheap amp to power the subs only?

added my powered sub picture as well if I just end up going that route, I want to use the subs in the speakers for the movie aspect of watching TV having nice dual subs, but can of coruse use the powered sub I have as well.

Also from my receiver to my 2 front speakers I could not use directly this connection on the back since its not powered, but pre out?

Hi, Thor.

My research didn't turn up much info on the WWW with respect to those speakers. What I did find, though, was that they were sold as a system with a Kenwood amplifier. The amp had dedicated speaker outs for the subwoofer. You would run the wire from the amp to the speaker that had the sub in terminals. You then would daisy chain to the other speaker's sub-in.

You won't be able to do that with your Yamaha. However, the Yamaha does have pre-outs for the subs. What that means is that your receiver serves as a preamplifier when the pre outs are connected to amplifiers. Most people just connect them to active subwoofers and they are done. But you can just as easily run a cable from the pre out to pre in on any amplifier. Then you just connect your speaker wire from the amp to the appropriate terminals on the speaker.

You can either daisy chain or use an amp for each sub woofer. You can buy a pair of those chip amps; they're all over ebay. Here's a link to show you what I mean:

ok awesome, I'm getting now some bass from the 1 SUB connector directly to the 2 front subs, not sure how though since I don't have a preamp, figured pre out mean no preamp?

I'm going to pickup a subwoofer cable to connect the line input and sub2 connection, even though with a white RCA connected in the sub2 with my subwoofer line in (powered sub) I am currently getting bass, again not sure is that supposed to work with a standard RCA, is there a difference between it and a subwoofer connector?

Also ONE last thing that is bugging me, I have turned on the HDMI to ON for my receiver so that I can use my HDMI connected to the TV from my receiver to get sound while I run netflix from the TV.

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-48R550C and my Yamaha RX-V765, I cannot for the life of me get this to work, having toyed around with the settings in the TV bravia sync and AV settings (pics below). I have an optical connector I can use if this fails, I'd like to avoid that though. Any ideas?

Hmm ok the ARC it seems is not available on my receiver, unless I'm reading it wrong in the manual, I need 4.1 it seems unless potentially my hdmi wire is not 4.1?

Pre-out means that your receiver acts as a pre-amplifier, sending the signal to an amplifier. That is, preamplifier out to an amplifier. Without an amplifier, you can still hear a signal.

What are you using to connect SUB1 to the speakers? I ask because SUB1 is line level whereas the sub terminals on your speakers are speaker level.
Line = signal before amplification
Speaker = signal post-amplification

Not really, although a dedicated subwoofer cable will be a more suitable option if you have a run of over 10 feet.

When it comes to home theatre, I'm afraid I'm not much of a help. Your Netflix input needs to go into the receiver, not the TV. Is that how you have set it up? If no, that is probably the problem. If yes, I can't help you. lol.

You need an amplifier, or amplifiers, between those pre-outs and your speakers. That is my recommended set-up, but it costs more money, depending on how many amplifiers you want.

If you need ARC, your HDMI cable must support it. Lots don't.

Ok so one amp to take care of the 2 passive subs in my two front speakers then, could I be more annoying and have you show me what a decent one would be, not the kit ones you had before

Or are you saying I need an amp as well for the powered sub I have?

I think its my yamaha receiver that doesn't support ARC, I sent in a support question to them, since I'm not certain after reading the manual.

I'll pick up an optical cable for audio just in case tomorrow.

Your powered subwoofer has a built-in plate amp so you're fine.

You can either buy two amps (or a multi-channel amp) for the subs in your front speakers, or you can buy another powered subwoofer. I imagine that a powered subwoofer will be the lower cost alternative.

You can actually use car audio amps. They are basically the same principle has the plate amp on your powered subwoofer.

If you want the home audio look, then I recommend used Parasound amps. HCA1000, HCA1200. HCA806 for a six channel amp.

If you can find them, Audiosource offers good bang for the buck. Something like this:

You can even use vintage integrated amplifiers/receivers as long as they have pre-in inputs.

For sure on the plate amp.

But I'd get that JBL lol. That's a pro audio amp. You can run 15" subs with that amp. If it works, buy it. Approx $300 Cdn? They go for about 450-500 over here.
