I've mostly given up on the idea he'll return to the defensively responsible, hard working player he was in his first couple of seasons with the club.

Exactly what I see too. And so many high risk low reward plays. That kind of hot-dogging is something you see in soccer more than hockey usually. Save the clever between the skates plays for the offensive zone when there's nothing simpler available, not at your own blueline.
