I love my Country but national anthems before NHL games are a waste of time.

I think the 'opening act' is always a bit necessary - and for sports, it's the anthems I guess?

I see it the other way. lights go down, loud music, excitement. everyone is pumped for the game. players ready to go. then everything stops so we for 10 minutes stand there and listen to a song.
I'd rather keep the energy up and get right to the game.

Trump would want a northern wall built if we stopped doing the US anthem. Athletes taking a knee in protest was a pretty hot topic for a while.

I have vocally railed against this bull$h1t of Anthems for at least a decade. It's outdated, serves no real purpose and just wastes time wherein I mute the TV/go for a piss/Stand at the concessions until it's over and the REAL entertainment starts.

Put me in the category of people that think singing anthems before games is dumb. I would love to see the Flames start the trend of ending anthems. Like, probably about half the guys actually playing in the game aren't from the country of the anthem being sung so they don't really care. Half the people in the crowd are just staring at their beer waiting for the anthem to finish so they can take a sip. I don't feel any more Canadian or patriotic after the anthem. If someone does feel that way then I guess I have to question their actual level of patriotism if singing a song before watching a hockey game affects that in any significant way.

Best part of the anthem, hands down.
Kind of sucks we can only do it against US teams though...

I don’t know about ‘best part’ as much as the only way to make it worth standing through that ridiculous song.
I’d be interested to see a poll on pre game anthems. Has this been done before on CP?

This. Not even the crowd singing, Willie has cranked the volume in the organ to 9 in recent years, and is also dictating the rapid tempo of which the anthem is sung...he’s not the focal point, the song and singer are. Canyon has had to adapt, but it should be the other way around. But better yet, just let the anthems go A cappella.
And for all the heat Cotton Eyed Joe gets, Willie’s constant, daily insistence during stoppages of playing, and then morphing, cornball ####e such as the chicken dance and the hokey pokey and other stuff that people would play at their wedding as gags in 1979, into into “Go Flames go” lost it’s novelty long before action Cotton Eyed Joe was first sung.

It looks like they've updated her schedule to accommodate Canyon's political aspirations. Originally, she was just scheduled for the preseason games and a bunch in December when Canyon is supposed to be on tour down east. They've now added in the first few games of October, when he'll presumably be on the campaign trail.
Looks like it could a permanent gig for her if Canyon wins.

I don't mind the anthems. Not sure if it's because I'm so used to it, but I do like that moment right after the anthems, when there's no music, and the crowd goes from silent to loud cheers. I'm not sure if jumping right into a game after the pregame intro would have the same effect.
Plus, there's nothing wrong with singing anthems to honor the two countries. Maybe I'm just traditional that way.
Must say though, that whole "all of us command" still is jarring to hear. Not sure when I'll get used to that change.

Honoring the countries is great IF you are on a nation-vs-nation level like during the FIFA World Cup. Singing anthems during club competitions (like the NHL) where half the players aren't even of those nationalities seems too tacky. It is such a dictatorship, "show patriotism" thing only North Korea and the US will insist of doing...

I like tradition. I get why some say anthems get in the way. But I like the old way sometimes. I also liked satellite hot stove so maybe I’m being a curmudgeon.
