I agree that it is declining and also agree that the players are better for it. I will always have a soft spot for a good old hockey fight though. At least if one happens now they are less likely to be staged and are actually due to true emotion.

I think that this sums it up well. Declining is probably a good thing, but emotional over reactions will happen in sport at any level. The distinction between the two is important. I for one got a deep satisfaction from Bennett dumping a couple of fists on Nurse's face after an intense board battle, but got no pleasure from watching Lucic staggering Glass ( who was simply answering a call of duty).

Nothing would make me happier than to see fighting leave the game for good. “Old time hockey” be damned, it’s not your brain and body being crushed for spectacle, living the rest of your life on antidepressants. No amount of staged goonery will ever be worth another player quite literally killing themselves for your amusement.
Never mind how it affects little leagues when kids see hockey players whaling on each other and think that would be a really cool thing to do at the next practice.

I don’t think fighting should ever be removed as I think it’s part of the game and is entertaining, however I am not sad to see the traditional goon and staged fighting go away. I’d much rather watch an angry Sam Bennett go after someone than watch Gazdic and Ivanans do nothing for 7 minutes a game except stage a fight at centre ice.

All of the best Flames game I’ve watched had fights. Even the best playoff games
Just my opinion, and I don’t even mind the reduced level of fighting we have right now, but removing it from the game completely is going to make hockey a lot more boring.

I think Carcillo is actually quite respected by current and former players. I used to think he was a donkey but now I see him as a pretty gutsy guy.

If you want fighting out you have to call penalties properly like in football and basketball.
In football, a DB lays out WR . That's a 15 yard penalty and maybe an ejection. You don't see a fight break out.
But because the NHL let's so much go, players have to stick up for each other.
I agree that the consistency of officiating needs to be better, but it's not all on them. Good refereeing and fighting are not mutually exclusive. It's a weak argument at this point.

Even if they just grapple and take 5 minutes, I just hope it’s always a 5min major and no more. I also believe the purpose it serves fits with the game, but I don’t necessarily need to see another one. Especially not 230lb guys landing multiple clean haymakers. Knowing the repercussions, reported and first hand, I just wince when I see a big shot landed.

I agree. Carcillo is out of the game he could never play, made millions being an ass on the ice, and now wants to stand on the side criticizing.
People should honestly listen to Carcillo speak sometime before saying #### like this. The guy is putting it all on the line to fight this battle because he believes in it.
Go ahead and ask him if he would give up his Stanley cup ring to not have his concussion issues, or to go back in time and play the game differently. He'll tell you that he would give it up in a heartbeat.
Do you know how I know? I asked him that directly and that's exactly what he told me.

The biggest issue by far with the NHL right now is the officiating. It's the only professional sport where officials follow the league rule book situationally.
