I agree this seems like a ton but playing with terrible Detroit I think we might be missing how good Mantha really is/could be

I like Mantha more than most. He had been a massive possession player the two seasons prior to this. Not as much this season, but he's on a pretty bad team.

But it still seems like Yzerman is playing NHL 21 on Easy mode with this trade.

I don't think this trade is as lopsided as others believe.
Vrana is the key- he's got more points than Mantha this year in a lesser role on his team. To land him + the picks is quite a move.

It's the 1st round pick that makes it lopsided. Player for player it's almost even.

Cap's must have thought resigning Vrana would be unlikely for the dollar amount considering they also have to sign ovi

I wonder if he loads a package for Eichel.

And Panik is a cap dump. Had 2 more years on 2.75. I guess they figured to trade him and Vrana to offset the cap difference with Mantha, and they’re banking on Mantha to bounce back.

Ovi, Wilson, Mantha... all big boys

What in the ####?

Vrana is out scoring Mantha this season with waaaaay less ice time, is a year younger, and their career numbers aren't all that different either. He's also not known as a lazy unmotivated bum at times either (like Mantha is)

Why did the Caps add so much?

Incredible.

Though Mantha adds a LOT to that Cap line up. Size and scoing are hard to find in the same guy...he fills both those well.
Mantha's a good player...when he is actually playing. The guy gets injured a lot, and it seems like it always happens when he is actually playing well.

I'd say its about a 2nd round pick overpayment. Vrana + late first + cap dump would've been fine, adding in the 2nd is too much

Because Big = Good?

Yeah it seems weird. I think if it was the same deal with only the second round pick I would have thought it was pretty fair, but a 1st on top of that is crazy.

Im guessing Washington added the extra value to get rid of the two years remaining on Panik's contract though.

Once again Yzerman shows that he's much better than the other NHL GMs IMO.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
My guess is the Caps view this as two trades in one:
1) Panik plus a pick to relieve them of $2.75M in flap cap environment going forward with 2 more years on that contract;
2) Then Vrana plus a pick for Mantha.

I wonder if Yzerman jokingly said "I've got pics of you" and MacLellan panicked and threw out a deal Yzerman couldn't refuse.

This just doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah i think this is a pretty good deal for both now that i looked at it.

Moving Paniks $$/term is big....Vrana looking for a new deal and not likely looking for less money uneven if he got a lot of term...two picks both late in their round

Yup

I don't get this. Vrana seems like a player who's just starting to get good. Mantha is a big body, but his numbers also rely on getting top level ice time. He seems like the classic less opportunities = less production type player.

yeah, that one's a head scratcher. I really, really, really like Mantha, probably more than others. But that is nuts.

Maybe he said "I've got picks for you" and MacLellan misunderstood followed by the aforementioned panic/Panik.

I wonder if some teams just really aren't valuing 2021 picks. Could be easy to load up on scratch n wins

Yes it seems like teams have more value in the 2022 draft.

But everyone will cherish their picks when it's time for the draft. Even if it's a weaker draft.

I agree. Mantha playing with guys like Backstrom or Kuznetsov could unlock a 40 goal potential from mantha. Even if it doesn’t having him signed for 3 more years and shedding paniks contract still could be a huge win for the caps

Great trade for the wings too but it could be a massive win for the caps if mantha develops chemistry and fits in with the caps
