Default Sam Bennett contract negotiations.

Sam Bennett is the highest drafted player in the history of the Flames in Calgary. He is turning 23 and will be entering his 5th season in the league. After a great debut late in 2015 that included 11 playoff games he had a solid rookie year with 36pts and 18 goals. He scored in bunches and went on very long dry spells. He followed his rookie year up with seasons of 26, 26, and 27pts. He has played center but mostly wing. It is pretty safe to say he has not lived up to the pre draft hype that had him the top rated skater by central scouting.

This past season however he found his niche on the team and fills an extremely important role. He plays a physical, hard nosed game and has shown the ability to step up when the games matter. He was our best forward in the playoffs and his best games during the regular season were typically considered big games.

Treliving seems to be a big fan of Bennett he was his first draft pick as a NHL GM. What do you think the Flames do with Bennett? Do/should they sign him to a long term deal of 5+ years? Should they try to bridge him for one more contract that takes him to RFA to keep the cap hit lower? Is it time for the team and player to part ways?

He'll get the same deal.

2 years roughly $2M per?

I am hoping the Flames go 4-6 years around $3-3.75Mper

I can’t imagine why Bennett would do this.

He’ll go short term and hope he breaks out.

Bennett will push for a deal that gets him to UFA asap so he can break out somewhere else. There's a glass ceiling on him here after Gulutzan and he knows that wouldn't be the case everywhere.

Same deal sounds right. Identical years 3 years in a row, he won't want anything long term because he likely thinks he can still break out. Flames don't want anything long term because he's played over 300 games and his career year was his rookie season

Bennett doesn't have the skill to be anything more than a 3rd liner. Pay him as a third liner.

Bennett was our bruiser in the playoffs. 'Nuff said.

Finally a thread where everyone can agree on the answer!

Kidding

But I don’t see a long term deal.

Bennett is an average 3rd liner on a weak team.

He should pay the Flames 8 dollars per game just to play.

Am I doing it right?

I agree. I would like to see the Flames go semi-long on this. 4/5 years at around 3/3.25 per would be good. He brings physicality and truculence and is not a liability defensively (except some boneheaded penalties). He can also find his scoring touch, still.

No need to pay your 3rd liners large dollars or term. That is what bad teams do.

Go short term and let Bennett prove he deserves to move up the lineup.

I think short term is the way to go for both sides.

Bennett’s had three straight seasons of virtually identical numbers. I don’t want to say he’s never going to improve but at this point I think we more or less know what he is. He’s a really good third liner that can play top six when you need to shake it up for a few games.

Has to be short term I'm guessing he gets Derek Ryan ish AAV on a two year contract.

If the flames drive too hard of a bargain I can see Bennett going to arbitration and wanting only a one year contract because there are a lot of teams where he gets top 6 minutes on LW and is effective instead of being blockaded here.

I see Bennett wanting a one year deal, around $2-2.5. I think he breaks out this upcoming season but regardless he is a very important cog going forward. Then you have the fans that are calling him a 3rd liner and a bust. These same posters more than likely were saying the same thing about Backlund at this stage of his career. If Bennett breaks out they will start singing a totally different tune.

Hope springs eternal. As fans, I think its easy to see a player's best for stretches and assume that is what he can be all the time. The Monahan thread has some of these ideas, that his play at the start of this year reflects what he could be over 82 games.

Of course players get better, and occasionally make a quantum leap after a few years in the league. But Bennett and Monahan are two guys who have been remarkably consistent especially in terms of production so I agree with you that expectations should be based on past results.
