First trip to Calgary!

Hi everyone

I've been following the flames since the 08-09 season and I'm originally from Sydney, Australia. I moved to LA last year and in about a week I'm flying out to Alberta to spend Christmas in Canmore. Lucky for me, I get to have a day in Calgary on the 27th where I'm going to go see my first Flames game in the dome! (super psyched).

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me, for things to do during the day, especially any cool Flames-related stuff that might be worth checking out.

I would Pre-Game the Hockey game with an afternoon meal at Bolero's, Smugglers or the Cattle Baron Steakhouse. Might need a Reservation.

If thats out of your price-range, I would hit up some Viet. Just Google, Top Viet food in Calgary and find something close to where your staying.

You could check out one of the biggest AAA hockey tournaments in the world while you're here. The Mac's Midget AAA Hockey Tournament provides some great value. Perhaps you'd like to see one of your California teams play a local Alberta team.

If you are visiting from out of town and are a Flames fan, I would recommend grabbing a drink at Flames Central. Not my favorite place by any means, but for a first time visitor it is a cool experience.

If you want to take in the game day practice that is always an option.

Watch the morning skate (as noted above); also, get there early (~7:20 pm) to watch the teams warm up before the game (you can watch from the lower bowl).

The Saddledome also has a little memorabilia display on the south end of the main concourse.

Not Flames related, but Canada Olympic Park has the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (http://www.sportshall.ca/about-canad...e.html?lang=EN) which has some very cool hockey exhibits and I believe virtual sports exhibits to "try out" some sports like downhill skiing, curling and I think bobsleigh.

Canada Olympic Park itself is pretty neat to walk around. Lots of memorabilia from 1988 all over the place.

I'm only coming in on Sunday morning from Canmore so I'll really only have time for a few activities, if there's a CP meetup, I'd do my best to get in on that but I can't promise anything because I barely know what the plan is. I just made damn sure that I was going to get to see the Flames play live!

Before the game, go downtown to the Westin Hotel downtown and have yourself a double Ceaser( Canadian version of a bloody Mary using clamato )or two with there complimentary house roasted chex mix. The Ceaser was in vented there and has since become a staple of Canadian history. They make their Clamato right in house so the drink will never taste better then where it began it's journey 45 years ago. It is still the original recipe Walter Chell used at the time.

Where are your seats for the game?

If you do end up showing up early to watch the warm-up (as tvp2003 suggests), I'd also recommend walking around the concourse and looking at some of the displays. Some cool old stuff about the building of the Dome, the Olympics, the Flames, etc. Nothing too groundbreaking, but a slow lap around the concourse before the crowds arrive (or after the game for that matter) might be fun for a first timer.

That is actually great to know. I'll be staying at the Westin in January for a hockey trip with my school and I love me a good Caesar. Might as well try the original while I'm there.

The Canmore area is a nice area. Make sure to enjoy it while out there. Hitting up Banff and Lake Louise is a cool idea too.

In Calgary... What the other guys said. We also have great beef. The Texans keep buying it.
