Calgary at Edmonton

Calgary comes off a 5-3 victory over the visiting Avalanche on Thursday. It was Darryl Sutter's 700th coaching victory, making him the 11th coach in NHL history to reach that milestone.

"It means a lot," said Sutter, who coached the Los Angeles Kings to Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014. "It means I coached four good teams."

Oilers & Flames Becoming “Death Valley” Again for Opponents

History may be about to repeat itself. Longtime fans of the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames may remember the heyday of the two clubs. For eight consecutive seasons between 1983 and 1990, the Stanley Cup Final featured either the Oilers or Flames. At the time, Alberta’s teams earned the unofficial nickname of Death Valley because it was where wins went to die for visiting teams.
With Flames and Oilers in top form, Battle of Alberta set to return with a vengeance

You want bad blood? You want fists and fury? You want hostility? Forget about the Battle of Ontario. That’s like choosing ground chuck over Wagyu beef. What you really savour is the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.
On Saturday night Alberta’s acrimonious rivals will meet in Edmonton for their first of three bouts in 2022-23. They will probably spend hours beforehand sewing brass knuckles into their gloves and sharpening their shivs.
Let’s just take a minute or two to review a few high points from their sordid past.

I'm out of country next week so Game threads are open for anyone to post.

I'm out of touch, but how do we only play the Oilers three times all season?

Thanks for the great write up!

I think we’ll see a very entertaining game tonight. The Flames can win if they play their game like they did against the Avs.

Now I’d they let any doubts leak in from getting beat on the playoffs and get off our game, that’ll be a problem. Which I think happened to our stars in JG and Chucky, I think Huberdeau and Kadri understand what is required from them.

Now let’s see a 7-5 win for the Flames and a few Lucic beat downs on the lowly Oilers, maybe a smashed up Kane or Drai will do.

Flames win and Dube continues to roll on that line. GFG

Yes, I also do not understand this. We play the Av's and the Wild the same amount of time we play the Oil? How in the world does that make sense?

Edit: Also, GFG!

They thrown him out so much it’s gonna be more than Kadri. Luckily the Flames have at 3 great two way centres. Hopefully the 4th line doesn’t get caught.

I agree but I think he brings a different element in terms of some speed and grit. Will be a team effort for sure.

Absolutely.
Sutter himself has said its the combination of solid defense and center ice awareness to stay on top of Edmonton's stars. The change won't be an individual "shadowing" McDavid it will be how will Edmonton find a way to free McDavid from 3 solid 200 foot lines and defense pairings.

Sutter wants them to react to us, not the other way around. That will be the battle. We want possession and when its them we have at least 4 defenders who CAN close gaps even on a guy like McDavid and with 3 Selke type centers who can finish the job and turn back the other way it should be fun to watch..

I’m looking forward to this one, new and improved Flames team will make for a tight game and leave the Oil gasping for space.
I think the Flames will win this one.

Go Flames!

Right. Lindholm/Kadri/Backlund checks McDavid though the offensive and neutral zones, the D takes over after that. I’d sure like to see Weegar put him on his ass like he did to that Av last game. Hell, just once I’d like to see Zadorov catch McDavid open ice.

Attack that lame a$$ paper thin, AHL level defense. Get lots of shots on Campbell, and get in the way of McDavid in the neutral zone and don't let him warp up.

Its Clobbering time!
