As long as you check that the monitor is on the list of freesync that work properly with G-Sync.

OK someone is going to have to learn me about GPU prices. I'm tinkering with building a new rig and prices seem to be all over.

Browsing Newegg, I see a GTX 750ti 2GB for $499 which is several generations old. GTX 1080 8GB is $1200. GTX 2070 8GB $569.

I just want to play Witcher 3 on ultra and perhaps one more generation of games.

Just guessing, but are the 750 and 1080 sold by newegg or through newegg by a third party? Sometimes out of production items end up with ridiculous prices that way.

Anyways the 2070 should be about on par with the 1080.

1080ti used prices are currently in the 600 range. RTX2070 super is also around the 600 range, new (569 is quite a good price). 2080 supers seem to be in the 950 range, 2080ti in the 1400 range.

I imagine all of those prices will come down with new cards on the horizon, though.

Just the guarantee that it'll work properly without any farting around with EDID overrides.

I have a FreeSync 2 monitor (Dell S3220DGF) and a GTX 1080ti hooked up via DP1.4. When I first set it up, if the framerate dropped below 50 FPS, you'd start to get flickering and even signal cutout (screen goes black, monitor claims that it's trying to detect a signal). I had to use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to the override EDID of the monitor to force a FreeSync range of 52-164Hz (instead of the factory 48-164Hz). It's still a wicked monitor -- especially for what I paid -- but that detail was a bit of a nuisance if I'm honest.

Also, for G-Sync to work on FreeSync 2/Pro monitors to its maximum range, you need a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. My monitor had a DP1.2 cable included in the box but I had a DP1.4 already waiting when it arrived.

If I tell my wife random internet guy advised me to get 2080ti, will you vouch for me?

I didn't even pay $1200 for my GTX 1080 back in 2016. You'd be crazy to spend that much for a 4 year old card. Don't do it haha. In fact, you could go to MemEx right now and get a 2080 Super for $950-1000. That price will probably go down when the 3000 series cards are dropped in a month. I assume you're playing your games at 1080p? I think any of those cards would suffice.

Stock for the 2080 Ti seems to have dwindled to almost nil in Canada, at this point you might as well wait to see how the 3080 performs and costs.

I mean there are going to be a flood of used cards on the market soon, and no sane person was using an Nvidia card to mine.

I don't do VR, I don't do 4k and I don't stream.

I like to make my rigs last so that's why I'm leaning towards the 2080 variety because eventually I'll move into 4k as that becomes the new normal. I'm eyeballing the "glorious" intel build on pc part picker, but with 2080 super instead of ti to save a few bucks.

I don't think 4k is likely to become the new normal for PC gaming. I think it'll be 1440p at 100+FPS. But that probably shouldn't change your approach.

Why not just wait? They're announcing the new cards today. Price drops will start happening soon and will obviously peak when new cards ship. The difference between a 2080 super and a 2080 ti is not necessarily huge in terms of FPS in current games, but it's significant in terms of futureproofing.

I think that unless you're getting the latest top end card, you'll always be having to make concessions to run a game at max settings in 4K. Unfortunately, I don't see 4K being the standard for the foreseeable future. Right now, I can run almost all games at 1440p at max settings on a 1080. With a 2080 super or similar card I think you'd be set for quite a while even if you decided to pick up a 1440p monitor down the road.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be forced to wait for a new build anyway because of real life, so hopefully the price drop on the 2080 is significant when they release the 3000 series. Now, for the processor... hmmm.

My 1080ti was used as a mining card before I got my hands on it, so clearly there were some people doing it.

70-80% bump in performance is staggering, although I wish he had spent more time comparing to the 2080ti rather than the reference 2080. That's effectively two cards ago, with the super in between. Going to have to wait a bit for the real news, which is going to be FPS scores - I'm not sure why Nvidia wouldn't let them put those numbers in.

Don't want to ruin the suspense of the month long countdown, lol

2080Ti is going to be useless, and will be selling for peanuts if the 3080 is even 40% better, and is only $699 USD.

Lots of people complaining about reselling old cards, while previously they were complaining launch prices were too high. Nvidia can't win.

Right, I was just curious if they were gone.
