Default Darren Haynes News Articles Thread

I'm realizing I never really know when Haynes releases a new article, and I always like his stuff. So I thought a thread about them would be nice.. Here's his latest about the Ducks win being a good Omen!

Yeah I know but I really only ever come to CP for Flames news. Since I'm on this site all day long, I don't even have time for the other sites.

I enjoyed trying to name the 11 goalies who played for the flames during kipper's tenure. I got 9.

Haynes has become essential Flames reading. I wish The Athletic would give him a gig.

Selfishly, I'd rather keep reading him for free.

New Article: How I'd Fix the Flames: Six Games In, What I'd do if I was Named GM and Coach for a Day

Quote:
The first thing I'm doing is putting Freddie Hamilton on waivers. I realize he's a big part of Dougie Hamilton's life and it seems like a bit of a package deal but sorry, improving the team trumps my sentimentality for their family bond. This is the move I need make to open up a roster spot for a recall from Stockton.

In his last pre-season appearance, Hamilton took a dumb penalty. In his first shift last night, he took a dumb penalty. Discipline is already a problem with this team, I need my fourth line players to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Quote:
Mark Jankowski is ready, we saw that in the preseason, we've seen that so far in the AHL regular season where he scored again last night giving him five points (4 goals, 1 assist) in Stockton's first three games...Plus, I have top-nine plans for Jankowski so the sooner he gets here and he gets integrated into practice, the better.

Haynes pretty much reiterating the exact same sentiment Flames fans are saying.
And in fact, Treliving for that matter. Lots of hand sitting by the GM on this topic though.

I wonder if Treliving's hesitation to place Freddie on waivers is his fear of Dougie's play diminishing. It shouldn't matter if there is any indication Dougie is a consummate pro, but I wonder if that's the mindset from the GM?

Has anyone from the Flames ever hinted that Freddie is here because of his brother? It seems hard to believe that a professional athlete would need his brother on the roster for some kind of support. If other players thought this was the case, could it not result in some issues and a lack of faith in management.

I've got to hand it to Haynes here. Right on the money imo.

No one from the Flames that would create a media disaster, but there has been speculation from the media that Freddie is around because Dougie plays better when he's here.

This Dougie needs Freddie business is a bunch of BS and I don't believe it for a second. If he needs his brother around fine, but he doesn't need him on the roster. Live with him, travel with the team, cook for him, do his laundry for him, whatever... but a GM can, and should draw the line at a roster spot. If the GM doesn't, it says more about the GM than the guy who needs his brother around.

Outside of trading Brouwer, which seems unlikely at this point, the only roster moves, that seem feasible, are trading Stajan or demoting Freddie.

I can see why both moves are difficult to make considering Stajan is loved by his teammates and if an injury or two at centre occurs it would be nice to have Stajan as a safety net, given his ample experience, even though you do have Monahan, Backlund, Bennett, Jankowski, Lazar and Hamilton all with the ability to play there. On the other side of it Freddie is fine being a player that rarely plays and his brother is another aspect that should still be considered even if not all that much.

You don't want to have a player like Lazar as your 13/14th forward as he needs to play to develop and players like Brouwer and Stajan might not be overly thrilled about being put in that position. Furthermore, in Brouwers case you need to let him play because he is still one of the best 12 we have at the moment and you don't want to diminish him as an asset any more than has already been done.

If it was my decision, much like Haynes, I would go with:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Jagr
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Versteeg
Ferland-Lazar-Brouwer
Glass/Hamilton

Stajan is important to the team but if Jankowski is on the team you don't have enough regular spots for him, Lazar, Brouwer and Stajan. Jankowski and Lazar need to play and Brouwer is here whether we like it or not. These are our best 12 forwards.

As much as I've liked Glass in the limited role he has been given Jankowski should have been the priority. I will give Treliving the benifit of the doubt and assume he is working hard on a solution but Jank needs to be up here by the 10 game mark, in my opinion, for this to not be deemed a miscue.

I have no problem with Freddie sticking around as the 13th forward.

The guy that needs to go to make room for Jankowski is Stajan.

One year too long on that deal from Burkie.

Matt Stajan is virtually completely untradeable IMO unfortunately.

No one is going to take back him at this point in his career (probably not even if this team retains 50% salary) with what his contract is AND where his game is at. I'm almost convinced of that.

I mean if Stajan shows he's got anything left in his game at the trade deadline then MAYBE you could get peanuts for him when that comes, but failing that they might have to 'Mark Streit' Stajan if they want to get rid of him I'm afraid.

It's either that or take back another bad contract coming back for him.

Unfortunately I think Stajan is out of the league next year. Maybe try his luck on a PTO.

Here's another article of Haynes, 8 random flames thoughts:

Was thinking we should also tweet Haynes about that sad Hamilton (unassisted) goal that hasn't been changed yet.
