Holy user interface design;

Quote:
Around 8:05 a.m., the Hawaii emergency employee initiated the internal test, according to a timeline released by the state. From a drop-down menu on a computer program, he saw two options: “Test missile alert” and “Missile alert.” He was supposed to choose the former; as much of the world now knows, he chose the latter
EDIT:
Oh, apparently (non-reliable sources) their plan to fix this is to increase training for the people using this interface. Good luck with that.

I mean, this userface isn't terrible, there just needs to be 1 or 2 confirmation screens after you click the missile alert option.

Click "missle alert"
Pop-up "This will send a real alert to all users, do you want to continue?"
Pop-up "Confirm a REAL ALERT will be sent to all users"

After 38 minutes the potus should have been chiming in, not the governor. But what does he care, it's all about the ratings, racism and pornstars

For those who may not be aware but Canadian based Blackberry, the old smartphone maker has been making inroads in enterprise software and services business.

They have communication products that address crisis communication with federal government agencies in the US and the rest of the world.

Here is a blog post from them regarding the incident.

Are you a BlackBerry PR rep or something? I'm probably the least observant poster on this board and have noticed you shilling for them for months. It's weird.

So far all the reviews and videos I have found online are totally pumped. Its quite strange to see such positive energy for a Blackberry in 2017 but it sounds like a lot of people are excited about something DIFFERENT in the world of Android.

Just my thoughts

I am not a person who plays games on their phone or anything but the screen size may not be an ideal size for people who do A TON of games and video watching. You get to use more of the screen than a similar sized touchscreen since you don't have the pop up keyboard but it get's the job done for what 90% of people use their phones for.

If your looking for something different and something that actually has a little retro thrill back kind of cool, go for one. That is one way somebody described it to me, retro-cool, hipster style. I never had any other phone other than a Blackberry keyboard phone.

Just my $.02

I am currently using a Blackberry Keyone and I love it. The smoothness, build quality and the design is amazing. The battery life last's forever!

I know Blackberry has a bad rep the last few years and stuff but these are different now. They all run Android Nougat, have access to all the apps.

The best thing about the device is that I get a lot of compliments on the design. I think a lot of people just don't find all the black glass slab screens as exciting as before and a lot of people have good memories of back in the day when their Blackberry was the #1 phone.

Anyhow if anybody is looking for something different and has any questions, hit me up with anything and I will try and help out!

LOL No I am not a Blackberry employee or anything, I am just a big fan of their story. I probably should be getting a royalty for all the PR I give them to friends and family. I am in real estate and food service business myself.

If you know Blackberry fans, they are fairly hardcore regarding their phones and their love for the company and I guess I fall into that group. Carrying a Blackberry in 2018 is recipe for ridicule for a lot of us so I like to kind of help change the narrative.

Without sounding like I am giving another plug but I was sitting around the bar with some friends the other day, everybody talking about how their stock portfolios are getting either hammered or skyrocketing with bitcoin, weed stocks, tech etc.

I piped up that Blackberry was one of the best performing tech stocks in 2017 and so far in 2018, up over 75% and everybody looked at me like I was an idiot. "Isn't Blackberry dead?" they ask "No, their CEO is giving the opening remarks and announcing a new product at the North American International Auto show" I mentioned.

Since the thread topic had a Blackberry story to be told, I included the link.

Man, this is turning into an epidemic:

Quote:
Japan's public broadcaster mistakenly sent an alert Tuesday warning citizens of a North Korean missile launch and urging them to seek immediate shelter, then minutes later corrected it, days after a similar error in Hawaii.

NHK television issued the message on its internet and mobile news sites as well as on Twitter, saying North Korea appeared to have fired a missile at Japan. It said the government was telling people to evacuate and take shelter.

No, it made sense for the governor to respond, not the president. You want someone the Hawaiian people can trust during such a sensitive time.

If a nuke was launched on Hawaii by North Korea it would arrive in 10 minutes, so basically your chances of being able to do anything but phoning your mother in law to tell her she's the most evil person that you know, and walking down the hall to give your boss the double bird is pretty small.

in the case of Japan by the time that alarm goes off, you have maybe 2 to 3 minutes. Basically enough time to awkwardly turn to that work mate that you like and tell him or her "I've always loved you"

Apparently here is the old screen.
https://mobile.twitter.com/CivilBeat...26autosize%3D1

They selected the one (PACOM) two lines above the PACOM DRILL, and then did confirm it.
Certainly could use any number of visual/formatting enhancements to make it a little more obvious. Nevermind some secondary verification before the message goes through.

That said, other stories say that not all mobile phones got the alert, so likely however that happened (either carriers not supporting or blocking messages, hardware makers not having functionality, or users blocking these messages) this will probably allow that issue to be solved in the future too.

BTW, the password to Hawaii missile warning system is "warningpoint2". I know because it's visible on a public photograph they posted.

I think you would also want the person who is eventually in charge of the department that actually made the mistake to issue the retraction. This is a 100% state issue and the last time I checked the US is still a collection of States. The federal goverment isnt responsible for everything that goes on in the US and had no involvement in this whatsoever but umm I hate Trump so um um um fk Trump

If that ever happened to me, I hope I wouldn’t be surrounded by all the hysterical drama queens we saw on TV in the aftermath.

I’d prefer to be vaporized calmly while looking out over the ocean, empty beer bottle, still chill, in hand.

The missus and I were on the Big Island beachside in 2011 when the Japanese Earthquake happened, creating a major Tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands. I remember sitting on the bed chilling, casually watching tv when the warning system kicked in. It took a few minutes to dawn on me that it was actually a serious impact item for ourselves and we’d have to vacate. In fact, a mandatory evacuation, enforced by police and hotel staff. We had about five hours notice though so we took some time to pack some necessaries, documents, etc, then got in the rental car and set out on a drive to find high ground. It was dark but we found a nice spot on the side of a highway - along with about 50 other cars - where we could watch all the lights going out on the shoreline below at about 3 am when the waves started. Then peed in the ditch like everyone else and tried to sleep for awhile. At 3 am, listening to the radio, we were watching below. . . . . and nothing happened. When daylight came round, a local grocery store was open so we used the bathroom facilities - like everyone else - and were allowed back into the hotel about 10 am. The bay at our hotel was emptying and refilling with a significant tide, in and out, roughly every 15 minutes. Kind of a fun adventure but I wouldn’t recommend trying to sleep in a Cavalier.

Good lesson to always rent a minivan. Would have been great for you to bring some pillows and blankets from the hotel and make a little bed in the back.
