I assume that signing this contract would void the contract with the Flames, getting them off the hook for paying him. Am I wrong assuming that?
It depends on what his contract with the Flames says. I believe the standard way it works is if his new job pays him less than what he would have been paid by the Flames, the Flames have to make up the difference. If he's getting paid the same or more, then the Flames would be off the hook.
Since he's going from a head coaching position to an assistant, he'll likely be getting paid less, so the Flames would still be paying him.
I think some coaches have been in high-enough demand to get guaranteed contracts, so they get paid even if they get fired, but I doubt Gulutzan would have had enough pull for that.

Come on. This is the Edmonton Oilers here. Of course Gulutzan is getting a raise, and a guaranteed contract to boot.

Not sure how much of a good thing this is as a Flames fan. I was happy to see GG moved on as our head coach, didn’t seem like he was succeeding in that role. But he does seem like a good hockey mind, not so sure he won’t be a very effective assistant coach for the Oilers.
Not sure what it was about his tenure as an assistant in Vancouver that makes people think he'll do much better in Edmonton.
I mean, I get that he's a smart guy but wasn't a good head coach but really that doesn't mean he'll be some great assistant especially considering you know, he wasn't.

I'm actually kind of jealous with this move. Oilers now have two former head coaches as assistants who can focus on key areas and most likely be successful.
At least we can still talk about trading Sam Bennett and Dougie Hamilton to solve all of the Flames problems.
Damn Oilers. We should show them and hire Dallas Eakins as one of our new assistants....
In all seriousness i would be fine with Nelson or Kruger as assistants if the Flames looked at ex Oilers coaches. Kruger likely won’t come back unless henis a head coach but Nelson maybe?

I asked around and this is generally the case. My read on the situation is Gulutzan will make more than most assistants (he would've had to in order to lure him away from a guaranteed salary this year to sit at home). Essentially, the Flames split the difference with the Oilers for the first year.

Jelly. Seriously? Yeah how did that work out for the Flames with Dave Cameron?

Gulutzan has been in the playoffs twice in the NHL. The unsustainable Flames easily dispatched his Canucks in 2015 and his Flames got swept. Other than that he has been coaching teams that book tee times in April. Nothing to be jealous about.
