A 7x7 player should make a team a lot better. He did not make Buffalo better for 3 years.
This could be the move that finally drops the Sharks to the also ran category.
The Sharks have not had a sterling drafting/development record over the last 10 years after a great 2007.

Probably the 2018 1st our maybe the 2017 first plus maybe a 2nd. I doubt it would have been as high as a 1st and two 2nds though.
Could have been a 1st and a former 2nd like Kylington as well. I doubt he was ever going to be worth 3 high quality assets though, he was basically traded for a 1st, 4th and a former 5th round pick at the deadline after putting up much better numbers this year.

Not a good contract but the Sharks are trying to re-tool on the fly and replace Marleau/Thornton. Pavalski transitions into the grey beard and it is Couture and Kane’s team maybe with Meier and Hertl behind them.
I see this as the beginning of the end for the Sharks (unless they sign Tavares)

Hopefully this is the UFA contract that finally burns that team. I'm sick of them.
They arguably overpaid for UFA's like Boedker, Joel Ward, Paul Martin, etc and it never seems to come back and bite them. So frustrating that they just keep on making the goddamn playoffs.

He's a good player, but either the term is 2-3 years too long, or the aav is about $1 -1.5 million too high for what I think he brings.
What do I know though?

Although if they keep making the playoffs and we keep saying they're not a playoff team maybe they've built a better team than many rival fans think? (I say that as someone who thinks they'll be a non playoff team more years than not).

Whew. If that was the cost I’m glad the Flames never had a chance to get in on him. He’s not that good of a player.

I could have lived with the money at 4-5 years, or the term at $4.5-5.5 mil, but not both. Too much, although despite the overpayment he's still a hell of a player.

I think too many Flames fans got carried away with the games where he lit up the Flames. He’s at best a better than an average player that has managed to keep sucking teams into believing he’s got this untapped potential. His career stats are very mediocre vs the money he’s earned to date.

When Ferland scores 40+ points again next year is someone going to give him a 6x6?
I guess letting Kane score 4 goals that one time might end up paying off for the Flames

They seem to make up for any misses with shrewd draft picks (Hertl, Tierney, Lebanc, to a lesser extent Meier), solid trades (Burns, Jones) and random signings (Donskoi, Dell).
I suspect Kane ends up being what he has been for the past 5 years before this one, a guy who over an 82 game average gets 27 goals 23 assists for 50 points per 82 games played. I suspect they are hoping for 17/18 Kane who slightly outperformed that average at 30 goals and 26 assists for 56 points over 82 games, but Kane is pretty consistent year in and year out on a per game basis, just a question of whether he stays healthy.

Lifetime Suspension

So how long does He play inspired hockey before he..'settles in'?
Ufa signings are so ridiculous nowadays. Three good weeks and you can land yourself a $50M contract.

I wouldn't think so. But if he scores 20 goals and 40 points...4x5 is something that could happen. Ryane Clowe collected 4.85 million from the Devils this past year. Largely based off two good years playing with a much younger Joe Thornton. He was 31 when he signed that deal which was 4x4.85.
Kane has some pedigree. But it is a pretty stiff price to keep your own UFA.
The market for UFA wingers with size and some proven goal scoring ability can be very lucrative.

17/18: 29 goals in 78 games
16/17: 28 goals in 70 games
15/16: 20 goals in 65 games
14/15: 10 goals in 37 games
13/14: 19 goals in 63 games
12/13: 17 goals in 48 games
11/12: 30 goals in 74 games
10/11: 19 goals in 73 games
and he's still not 27 years old! He's a consistent offensive threat.

Kanes last deal was worth 7.5% of the salary cap at the time of the signing.
This one is worth 8.8% of the cap assuming an $80 million salary cap this next season.
Not a massive raise when you look at it like that I guess.

7x7 and a first round pick for Kane seems steep to me

Career high of 57 points. 9 Seasons in the NHL.
Not a 7 million dollar player under any circumstances, combine that with questions around his character (fair or unfair) and there is no way you do this deal. Not even sure he would have gotten a comparable contract in Free Agency.

I was interested in the Flames chasing Kane at the deadline or the summer but at the cost of a 1st and 7x7 I am glad they sat on the sidelines on this.
The contract is not quite Lucic bad but no doubt the Sharks regret it with several years left

This contract will be an albatross for the Sharks. So glad it isn't us paying it. And a 1st to boot. No thank you.
