Canada actually leads when it comes to banking technology.
Ever been south to the states? They don't have chips yet.

Rumours of Apple removing the 3.5mm headphone jack?
LOL
http://www.cultofmac.com/399993/appl...eadphone-jack/
Quote:
Rumors that the next iPhone could do away with the industry-standard 3.5mm port in Apple’s relentless pursuit of thinness have been around for a while, but they’re seeing a resurgence thanks to a post on a Japanese blog. The article cites “a reliable source” that claims the Cupertino company will shave 1mm off the phone’s thickness by dropping the just-way-too-fat jack in favor of proprietary Lightning connectors.

Haven't been in the States in a couple years now but the amount of cash still being used is shocking.

Yes they do. Im not sure how long it's been in effect but I received a new credit card to replace my expiring Bank of America card. It had a chip in it.

Not to mention US have a visa/debit card combined into one where you can choose debit or credit at the till. That would be awesome!

I don't know why Canadians are excited about Apple Pay.
My Canadian cards all have NFC so I just need to tap to pay. In the States, most of my purchases are still swipe-and-sign. Some cards have chips in it but most of the stores don't accept it.
I haven't even seen NFC on cards so Apple Pay is a much better alternative in the States.

Yeah. I think the chips are common, but Paypass or Tap to Pay transactions were unheard of. I felt like Marty in Back to the Future when I was in California. Holding my card out ready to tap, and the guy is like, "uh, you can just slide it now, thanks."

I think mostly just because it would reduce the # of cards I carry around even more, and easier to use my phone vs. my wallet.

The 3.5mm jack has been around for decades, and is fairly limited in terms innovating on it, without changing it too much. Apple using the Lightning connector allows them to do a lot more with the audio. Rather than sticking with 2 channel audio, they could create legit surround sound headphones using the lightning connector, add more speakers to the headphones to offer more channels of audio. Hell, they could get creative with the headphones as well, maybe toss in a couple batteries in the headphones as well, so when it's plugged into the iPhone, it can offer additional power to the iPhone. Or maybe a VR headset add-on? I'm sure there'll be some additional accessories that can be built on top of the headphone by tying it into the lighting connector.
That being said, that would be a huge change for me. I've spent my fair share of money on good headphones, which I use with my iPhone constantly. So it'd really suck to have to use them with an adapter.

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world as long as there's an adapter I could keep on my earbuds.

Yeah, but unlike the US, there isn't the state of collusion amongst companies that we have here.
If the CDN big banks want Apple Pay, they can effectively freeze it out of the marketplace so that it's only available on niche non-banking credit cards

If I was an iPhone user, it wouldn't really impact me anyway since I'm gravitating toward Bluetooth earbuds anyway. Corded earbuds are a pain in the ass for working out - 3.5mm jack or Lightning port. However, I'm also a tech enthusiast who wouldn't mind dropping the money for good BT-enabled earbuds. I'm not the average user, so I'd be curious how receptive the majority of people would be to this.
I guess Windows 10 and Android devices could counter with USB-C earphones.
Sucks for people who rely on using an AUX cable, though.

What kind of battery life can you expect from good quality bluetooth headphones though? Battery tech isn't where I'd want it to be to expect some long term use of headphones if the battery won't hold a charge in a few years.
I have no issues with a new connector if it allows better quality audio through the device, but I'm not sold on bluetooth headphones yet myself.

I'm having trouble envisioning any feature that removing the 3.5mm jack would allow that couldn't be achieved simply by using the existing lightning port. You can already send a digital audio stream out to an external DAC, and it would be trivial to do the same with any headphones designed with a lightning connector.
Personally I wouldn't be a fan of any device that can't be charged and be connected to some kind of peripheral device at the same time without an adapter, but that didn't stop Apple from releasing the 12" MacBook which suffers from exactly that.
