Quote:
he ottawa senators (@senators) announced today that the club has acquired forward mikkel boedker, defenceman julius bergman and a sixth-round draft choice in 2020 from the san jose sharks in exchange for mike hoffman, cody donaghey and ottawa's fifth-round choice in the 2020 nhl draft.
"today's trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice. We are confident it is a step in the right direction for the long-term success of this organization," said senators general manager pierre dorion.
"mikkel boedker is a competitive, versatile, two-way forward who can play both wings," added dorion. "he has a track record of playing his best hockey in the most important games, including the playoffs and internationally. His skill set - in particular his speed - along with his veteran leadership fits with our vision for the team."

I don’t mind seeing the Sharks grab the two guys I absolutely did not want on the Flames.

I know there’s baggage but I’m a bit fed up with the whole “character guys” act we’ve been seeing. I’m sick of watching bozos like Brouwer. If you can play hockey you’re welcome on my team any day.

Sens got more than I thought they would. Boedker is a solid middle-six forward and Bergman still has some upside. It's a far cry from the value they would have got without the off-ice stuff, but all things considered I think it's best for them to tutn the page and move on.

As some on twitter have pointed out, at least this trade takes San Jose out of the Erik Karlsson sweepstakes.

Well Tree, you've got some work to do. A team that finished ahead of us just won a trade - big time.

If you think it sucks, imagine how an Ottawa fan must feel. Melnyk strikes again...

Credit the Sharks, they jumped at it. Another missed opportunity by our management. We needed a player like Hoffman and could have maybe had him in deal that sent Brouwer the other way. 6 months from now, no one is going to care about this Karlsson drama. Also, as far as I know, there has never been any indication that Hoffman was a problem in the locker room until this incident, which isn't even on him, it's on his girl. Which still hasn't even been proven.

Wow, this trade makes the Sharks as the team to win the conference in my opinion
Senators look like a team that will be really bad.....

Maybe is the key word
Boedker is over 4 years younger than Brouwer, putting up better stats and is cheaper both in terms of cap and actual salary owed which is very important to the Sens. Seems like the Flames would have had to sweeten the pot if you wanted to include Brouwer when comparing to what the Sharks actually gave up. Perhaps the Flames just weren't interested in doing that.

Bergmans a really nice player to go back to Ottawa. Boedker could use a shake up.
Still, Flames weren't going to touch Hoffman until the personal life issue was sorted out so no big loss other than thats another 30g guy in our division.
