Exactly.
One does get a long season here, with a heater selectively used, but it is a massive resource sucker regardless.

CL Marketing is where we get our pool chemicals for Glenmore pool.... maybe see if they will decant some for you?

One of the responses in that reddit thread I found earlier yielded this.

No idea what grade you need or how you order this stuff (do you need a permit?) or how long it takes to ship... but Biotech grade is $107/5kg (or $26 per kg) vs reagent grade at $71/5kg or $17 per kg. Putting biotech grade boric acid sounds nefarious though.


If you're doing your experiment anyways, could consider this site while you wait?

Grades for chemicals is only to describe purity. Biotechnology grade is fairly high.

I don't know if non scientists can buy from Fisher but the site you linked is the US site. You want fishersci.ca

anybody can typically buy from vwr.com, fishersci.com or sigma-aldrich.com. But these are companies that typically cater more to research and pilot scale type programs. Meaning you are going to be paying a significant premium for the chemical. That said you'll be assured of the purity.

You should be able to get boric acid from numerous places...Home Depot Walmart etc. Should be in the pest control aisles.

Was looking for some boric acid today to take care of an ant problem.
The pharmacist at Shoppers had no clue what it was. Sobeys pharmacy... Same thing.
I'm still looking.

sigma-aldrich or fishersci but that grade may be higher than you need. In Calgary, you can try chemfax.

For a 10,000GAL pool you'd have to add 16.6KG OF BORAX! Then you have to add about 8 LITRES of acid to counteract the PH rise from the borax.


The benefit of using boric acid is that it's PH impact on the pool is limited, and the acid in the boric acid counteracts the Ph rise from the boric-part of boric acid, so it's essentially Ph neutral from a pool-Ph perspective.

Wouldn't Borax work fine for this application? Most garden stores carry it and *believe* borax is preferred over the straight acid for this application.

Borax works, you just need a ####e tonne of it. The actual acid is much more concentrated so you don’t need as much.
