I was there during the third round, while winning definitely helps to get fans on board I was still amazed at how much the locals have embraced the team.

Help, save, whatever.

This is the first finals I can remember that I'm actually looking forward to the games and even a little excited.
I just hope for a great series and it goes seven.
I have no idea who is going to win.

pretty remarkable history shared by McPhee and Maclellan... more than just the caps organization... the guys played bantam in Guelph together as well as being college room mates at Bowling Green and played with each other with the NYR...
https://sports.yahoo.com/maclellan-f...235903368.html
now their teams playing for the stanley cup?
also funny... the Simpson screen shot from 1999...weird

Gretzky and his cadre of bad hair and nauseatingly entitled teammates undoubtedly stood in the way of a couple more Stanley Cups in Calgary.
Washington has my love for this.

Actually the only year i would say this is true is 1988. In 1984 the Flames really weren't that great. In 1986 they beat the Oilers. It was the sweep of 1988 that really hurt. The Flames should have won again in 1990 but lost to the Kings. 1991 was another battle of alberta - but the Oilers were a different team by then and yes the flames should have won that series too - but Gretzky was long gone by then

So many people cheering for the Caps just because of Ovi.
The NHL desperately needs to promote personality and create more superstars.

The nature of competition is that there can only be a limited number of superstars.

I'm not sure how the NHL can "create" another Ovi.
That is pure God given scoring talent there.

According to Oilers fans and the Edmonton media they have an entire team of “superstars.”

I heard driving into work on the radio this morning that a guy has a betting slip for $5000 for the Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup when they were at 500-to-1 (i.e. a potential 2.5 million dollar payout). The casino is willing to buy back the ticket and give him a cool 1 million dollars. The guy has declined the offer.
/I'd be taking the million at this point, but I have bills to pay

Wow....that'd be a tough call.
Do you take the guaranteed $1M or bounce on the Devil for the whole $2.5?
I must admit, I'd probably take the cash too.

Yah I know a guy who put $100 down at 500:1.
Sold his ticket for $13,000 after the 2nd round.
Casinos trying to save some cash.

Yeah I would think a large majority of the middle class would take the $1 million but since he was willing to bet $5000 on a super long shot I doubt he's hurting for cash. Losing out on the $1 million might not be a big deal to him.

If someone in my family passed on a million dollars to MAYBE win 2.5 million I’d smack them upside the head. Passing $100 for $250, sure, but at that point passing up on a million dollars is pure idiocy. Obviously the guy must be well enough off to be passing, but still... just seems absurd to me.

Fair enough, and dont forget that this is America so he only gets to keep roughly half of that.
