Yeah, not at least making the “short” list is a pretty big bummer. We have a lot of work to do.

I don't think amazon is willing to expend political capital by choosing a Canadian City.
I don't think Toronto has a snowballs chance either, but it looks good to put one Canadian city on the list.

I really feel that Calgary is just too close to Seattle for us to have ever had a realistic shot.

Yeah, I always thought that area was a leading candidate too. I think the proposal specifically mentions easy access to DC.

I felt the same. Although LA being on the short list is kind of a shock.

LA is about twice the distance from Seattle? And probably a lot closer to millions of potential customers than Calgary.
I might be the odd one out, but I'm not bothered in the slightest. Logistically it wouldn't make sense regardless of how great Calgary is/was/could be. And I can't even pretend like Amazon isn't already becoming a corporate overlord for most people's lives, selling and shipping tons of #### most people really don't need, the living definition of consumerism.

Why does the HQ2 have to be far away from HQ1? I'd be willing to bet that there will be a lot of travel between the HQ's for various Exec and Management meetings. So maybe travel costs between HQ's will be taken into account as well?

Then just expand HQ1?

I feel that regardless of what they decide to do here, Amazon is going to put something on the east coast eventually. To me, it makes more sense to do it now and fill in any sort of gap after, if necessary.

I'm going to assume this is because Calgary's being saved for HQ3.

Real Estate + Resource (people) costs may be more expensive than Calgary real estate, resource, and travel costs.

I look at the list and literally almost every one of them makes more business sense than Calgary.

It isn't just geography. By greater metropolitan area, those 20 cities are all bigger than Calgary. Most of them are much bigger.

Calgary may punch above its weight, but it really isn't a big city by North American standards.

Raleigh and Nashville are pretty similarly sized. Pittsburgh and Columbus aren't much bigger.

But they're in densely populated regions. Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill has over 2 million people. Nashville metropolitan area has 1.75 million, and is growing rapidly. Greater Pittsburgh has 2.3 mil. Greater Columbus over 2 mil.

People in Western Canada maybe don't realize that what we have here - cities surrounded by essentially unpopulated hinterlands - is not the norm in the older parts of the continent, where cities flow into one another in unbroken built up areas.

I wonder how that rock is doing now. Has it flipped any more cars lately?
