In the few games that I've been able to watch, the main takeaways I have are:

Jankowski would be more effective in the NHL than the AHL. He makes all sorts of good plays in low space but because the skill level there is a little lower, none of his teammates are around to benefit from them. He also protects the puck very well.

Vey has some filthy mitts at this level. He can waltz around the offensive zone without being touched more than you'd think.

Kylington looks bored/casual more than I'd like, and he still really hasn't figured out how to move the puck under a hard forecheck (though I could just have expectations way too high). When he's on, he looks like a slightly smaller Brodie out there (2015-16 Brodie, not 2016-17). He breaks the puck out with absolute ease and can skate the puck up and make a zone entry, then dish it off to a teammate. I wish he'd be a little more assertive and drive the net when he has a lane but I imagine the coaches don't want him running around out there. He also has an excellent stick that he uses to prevent zone entries and separate attackers from the puck, allowing his d-partner to swoop in and start a breakout. His high-speed puck handling (which was a strength last year) seems to have gotten worse this year. He bobbles the puck quite a bit more than you'd expect. However, he's still very very good and I still expect him to be a quality top 4 guy sooner rather than later. Also, I continually confuse him with Ryan Lomberg when I watch. I don't really understand why.

When I watch I pretty much only pay attention to #4 so that's all I've got. Everyone else seems solid at worst, though Shinkaruk (while almost too skilled for this level) gets very selfish at times. Also I really think Hunter Smith can be a legit player someday. There's a lot more to his game than facepunching. I'm not talking top 6 but I think he can an asset to a 3rd line, among u22 AHLers this year, he's 14th in 5v5 p/60, and he plays with pluggers all game. He only has 2 fewer points 5v5 than Janko. Klimchuk was buried with defensive starts and bad linemates last year and he put up about the same numbers as Smith. I think if you let him play up the lineup that you would be surprised at the level of offense he can provide.

Smith played with Bollig for much of the year and Bollig was tied for the team lead in goals, while Bollig isn't an NHLer anymore he is hardly a plugger in the AHL, iirc he has also played with Angelidis a lot another guy who may not be an NHLer but is not a plug in the AHL either. Smith has looked good, but there is no reason to downplay his linemates to make him look better.

FWIW, we'll have a nice long interview with Huska on FN during the break.

Looks like our AHL guys are on holidays so I'll chip in with some post game info from Mondays game.

Stockton loses to San Jose 4-3 in Overtime

Mark Jankowski (7) ASST: Morgan Klimchuk (10)
Morgan Klimchuk (10) ASST: Rasmus Andersson (15), Mark Jankowski (13)
Austin Carroll (3) ASST: Hunter Smith (6), Mike Angelidis (8)

Janko and Klimchuk with 2 points each. Rittich 26 saves on 30 shots. Heat only managed 19 shots.

The Heats were playing pretty well, carrying most of the play against the Roadrunners, but then they took 3 bad penalties and Tuscon's obscenely broken PP converted all 3.

3-1 bad guys late in the second.

Well, sometimes you lose games that you could have won. The Heat are now down 4-1 against Tucson, but they had some fight left in them, as a line brawl breaks out after Garland and Lomberg started getting into it with each other. At least 8 players between both teams earned an early trip to the showers, including Kanzig, Poirier, Angelidis, and Lomberg. Old fashioned hockey.

Played 5 seasons with the Red Deer Rebels. Never drafted although he was ranked the #184 NA Skater for the 2014 draft.

Flames think he has some potential. They invited him to their training camp this past September but he already accepted a try out offer from the Oilers. Literally, as soon as he was cut from the Oilers camp the Flames put an AHL contract in front of him.

Huska loves him. Been paired primarily with Kylington for almost the whole season when at even strength. Helps provide some stability when Kylington goes for high risk plays.

The Heat have a tough team this year, Bollig and Smith, two guys who are fairly well known for their fighting weren't even involved in this. Lomberg seems like an NHL level agitator/a-hole haha.

Too bad the Heat aren't getting the results lately after such a promising start, it's great to be outshooting teams but gotta get results. Hopefully they can turn it around soon.

^ A silver lining with a few losses is sometimes with a young team they can learn more from their losses then their wins. It puts everything under a microscope and makes you tighten up on your play. But too many of said losses and it's no longer a learning tool.

4-2 Heat now. Mangiapane with two goals, and Jankowski has a goal and two assists.

I have no idea how Hunter Smith is playing, nor do I know if his skating is getting anywhere near NHL level, but he does have 9 points in 22 games this year; last year, he had 8 points in 54 games.

Man, didn't think Mangiapane would do this well so fast. He might get a call up this year.
