Exactly. I split my time each month between Calgary and the Charlotte area. Thee is traffic here everywhere. Every 5 minutes on the freeway you are in another smaller city.

They did. I was just pondering if it found anything to do in its new location. Probably lonely without the traffic or paparazzi.

It's in a park now where it can roam freely.

^ hopefully they put it next to other rocks so it can tell it's story.
maybe it is close to the rock of ages or other famous rocks like the stone of triumph and the stone of shame form the simpsons.
anyways, we will all eventually be working for amazon, so they will eventually move here

I know this is a sh*tty thing to say, but stuff like this makes me worried that I've picked a bad place to raise my kids.
Maybe I'm paying attention to the wrong people creating change, opportunity, and new things in the world... but when I listen to them, they're always hanging out in places that simply aren't the Calgary-Edmonton corridor.
What, exactly, is our "megacluster" all about?

I don't think Amazon was going to be the ones to bring change and opportunity to this world. They are what they are, the number one retailer in the world. I don't see them expanding on that much.
I do agree with you, Alberta does need some risk takers. I think that's a discussion for another thread, though.

I'm going to go ahead and make a smart ass reply to this:
Considering this is literally a list of cities that make the most business sense for Amazon, and Calgary isn't on it, I would say your observation is both accurate and insightful.

Calgary a "bad" place to raise kids? You think it's better to raise them in NYC, Boston, DC, San Fran, Dallas, Chicago, LA, etc because big companies are attracted to those locations?
Calgary has tons of big city opportunity without the, lets call them "social" problems, those mega-American cities have.
I wish Southern Alberta had more lakes. Other than that inconvenience, this is an awesome place to live and raise a family IMO.

Those mega cities are really not bad at all to raise a family. I can see why one would chose a smaller place like Calgary, but don't kid yourself, a lot of the cities on your list are great in their own way as well.

The guys that decide where this goes don't have to deal with any of the social downsides of where ever this thing goes, for them you could put in downtown Damascus and other than a slight smell of burning flesh wafting in from outside the gated community they'd be barely aware there was a war on.

My friend said a similar thing. That he hopes his kids move away from Calgary as he feels the city has peaked. I see his point, but yours I think is too far.
Your infering that Calgary is bad now and for the next 20 years. Raising your kids now in Calgary is a no brainer. It a top 5 world city on many metrics. Safe, clean, relatively affordable. Heck the company I work for which is not in oil and massive will be here for the long haul.
Maybe just maybe your kids won’t want to stay, but there isn’t much chance of Calgary needing Robocop to patrol any time soon.

I've lived in an American mega city and I loved it. I was young, childless and employed. Have you ever been unemployed or uninsured while in the USA? What if your kid had a chronic or rare condition? You'd go bankrupt. People who choose to raise a family move to the suburbs I find.
So yeah, the cities themselves are bad to raise families. Try having 2 or 3 kids in a Manhattan apartment on a middle class income.
