Gulutzan would not use him properly on the PP.

He wants to win a cup. There are teams closer to that goal than we are. I can see him signing with NYR, Boston, or Tampa. Although doesn't NJ own his rights?

He is 100% UFA on July 1st. The NJ rights or the other 30 teams have to approve his return expire then.

How on earth are the Rangers closer to the cap than the Flames?
We're an RW from being really good, they're rebuilding.
(not saying he'd sign here, and not saying I'd want him to, just saying)

I'd sign him. Knowing full well he could easily pot 25+ goals.

I would. But would he?
Eastern markets always seem to suck up all the higher profile UFA vets like him.

It is a no brainer to try and get him to sign with the Flames. You have to at least try.
The problem is it is rumored he wants to stay on the east coast (preferably in NY or Florida) and he wants to join the triple gold club, which make it though for the Flames to be a top destination for him.

Would love it if he was a right wing. Unfortunately, the guy has played LW in his career, which we are quite deep in. Most of the Russian snipers play their off wing (aka Ovechkin, Kucherov, Semin), so we would have to hope Kovalchuk is ok playing the opposite side. Another option would be to move Gaudreau to the right side like in the World Cup last year, but that could mess with the proven chemistry between him and Monahan.

We’re in a very unique situation in that we’re desperate for RWs, don’t have a lot of assets, but have a ton of cap space for 1 year. Depending on how high the cap rises, we could sign all of guys and still have $10M-$12M leftover to sign 1 player.
I wonder what he’d do if we drove a dump truck with $10 million up to his house (mostly signing bonuses). He can’t say no to that can he? The opportunities, the money and the chance to win surely has to trump whatever East Coast preference he has.

Florida makes the most sense. He'd get to play with Dadonov again, his former linemate in SKA. And Barkov. And their biggest need is a guy just like him, a top six scoring winger.
I can't see Rangers being in play anymore since they are pretty much rebuilding now and Hank is getting old.

Can't see him signing anywhere but out east.
But just for fun:
Gaudreau - Tavares - Kovalchuk
Tkachuk - Monahan - Bennett
or....
Kovalchuk - Tavares - Bennett
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Ah well.
Reality's a bitch.

He isn't coming here, Leafs might have the cap space with JVR & Bozak coming off the books.

Kovalchuk to NYR likely, but they’re not gonna be a contender for a while
