Default Calgary wins bid to host 2025 Rotary Convention and meetings

didn't see this posted anywhere. Huge win and international exposure for Calgary

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...tion-1.4347419

Calgary has been chosen as the host city for the Rotary International Convention in 2025 — a massive gathering expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors.

The annual meeting sees 20,000 to 40,000 members of the service club come together from more than 100 countries around the world.

"Calgary had stiff international competition for this convention, which makes it even more prestigious for Rotary to select Calgary," said Clark Grue, president and CEO of Meetings and Conventions Calgary.

"This is a huge win that will benefit our entire community."

Calgary was up against Singapore, Warsaw, Dubai, and Gothenburg

wow, that seems amazing to plan an event so far into the future. that is like an olympic games lead up.

now what are the odds that the saddledome will still be in use?

from the article they expect 20,000-40,000 attendees not including spouses and extra family that might stay longer. I imaging there's significant planning required for an event this size

After all these years, I still have no idea what Rotaries are. I just imagine a lot of old uncles and seniors.

That's basically it. One of my first trips to Australia as a kid and my grandpa dragged me to one of his. It was awful. Tons of old guys speaking with thick Aussie accents. Basically spent 4 hours wondering WTF these guys were trying to say to me.

I normally suggest that you run, not walk to your nearest ticket retailer; however, only those with a rotary membership will get a chance to get tickets - your best bet to grab ducats is the tertiary (not the secondary) market

good luck - you will get a ton of bank with the wife if you can grab tickets for this event

I went to their Wikipedia page, and I am somehow more confused....they might either be a bunch of old people or a rival for Scientology

Quote:
PHILOSOPHY

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:[4]

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
This objective is set against the "Rotary 4-Way Test", used to see if a planned action is compatible with the Rotarian spirit. The test was developed by Rotarian and entrepreneur Herbert J. Taylor during the Great Depression as a set of guidelines for restoring faltering businesses and was adopted as the standard of ethics by Rotary in 1942. It is still seen as a standard for ethics in business management.[5] The 4-Way Test considers the following questions in respect to thinking, saying or doing:[6]

Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

As my memory seemed to tell me, Calgary has hosted this event before, in 1996.

http://www.rotaractorwiki.org/wiki/R...nal_Convention

There were almost 25,000 attendees for that one. It seemed unlikely to me that Calgary can even accommodate that many visitors, visitcalgary.com says Calgary has more than 11,000 hotel rooms, which doesn't seem like enough for an event that size.

Interesting, I'm a guest speaker for a rotary meeting today. There is so much formality to their meetings.

My son won a speaking prize for a Chinese Rotary club speech competition. Still, I have no idea what they do. I am starting to think they have something to do with either speaking or naming rights to parks.

They are just a group of moderately successful (mostly white) old guys that like to get together and pat each other on the back. They sponsor exchange students, build parks, and things like that.

They're a service club. So they fundraise and then donate those funds to various causes. They sponsor all kinds of parks and other benevolent things in the community.
