Halt and Catch Fire (new AMC series)
Did a quick search and didn't see a thread on this yet.
Halt and Catch Fire is a new AMC show. It premiers tonight. Basically anything AMC does turns to gold these days, so I'm really looking forward to it. The premise sounds super interesting. I would imagine there will be lots of spying and espionage.
Quote:
Set in the early 1980s, series dramatizes the personal computing boom through the eyes of a visionary, an engineer and a prodigy whose innovations directly confront the corporate behemoths of the time. Their personal and professional partnership will be challenged by greed and ego while charting the changing culture in Texas' Silicon Prairie.

I thought it kinda sucked.
The credit/title sequence is really really cool, but other than that I thought the dialogue was cringe worthy, he story seemed silly in most parts.
It seemed a lot closer to the "bad" AMC than the good AMC. Just my opinion of course.

Yeah, AMC has had a tough run. The Killing sucked ass. Rubicon was axed too quick. Small Town Security is a dud. Breaking Bad is done and Mad Men has 8 episodes left in a year.
I've heard good things about TURN though ... the subject just doesn't interest me though.

Did you catch Low Winter Sun?
If you liked that, you MIGHT like H&CF.
I thought they were equally bad for similar reasons, but that's the only AMC show that immediately pops into my head as a comparison (and not a great one).
If anyone wants to watch it, just see if you can get 20 minutes into it without cringing or laughing. If you can, maybe you'll like it.

The final season of The Killing was INCREDIBLE. They screwed up with season two though and I think too many people gave up after that.

Guess I was the only one that liked this show. I thought the first episode was pretty good.

TURN was very good the last half of the season, the action really ramped up as well (since most reviews from the first couple episodes complained it was too slow).
I'd still like to see them get away from the love triangle aspect of it, which Jamie Bell's character keeps finding himself in. Admittedly the show is at its best when the redcoat characters have the screen. Angus MacFadyen (Braveheart), JJ Feild, Burn Gorman (Game of Thrones), and especially Samuel Roukin (who's psychotic Captain Simcoe is stealing the show IMO) have been excellent.
Less focus on love drama (which really hasn't been that central, but I'd still like to see less focus on it), and more on the espionage angle, and I wouldn't even be slightly concerned about it potentially not getting renewed.

So I guess a lot of people gave up on this? I'm really enjoying it. A lot of the characters are horribly flawed, yet you still find yourself cheering for them.
Didn't catch the first few episodes as they ran, had to go back and catch up, but I'm glad I did.
I'm wondering if it feels a bit like Mad Men? I still haven't watched that show yet and I will get to it eventually, but seeing as both are AMC and both deal with a specific time and workplace, I was wondering if anyone who has seen both can comment if there are any other similarities?

Watched it since day one and I think it's a great series. Sure the first few were a little slow but they needed to start somewhere. Can't wait for the convention!

I'm still watching it and love it. Just haven't watched the last episode yet (still on the PVR), but this show has been a lot of fun.

I watched the pilot episode on demand but just barely got through it. Now I wouldn't say it's a terrible show since the acting is quite good but I felt the writing was a tad subpar. I think for me it was the shows suject matter, after the 10 minute mark I was bored to tears but I can definitely see why some people would enjoy the show.

It seems to be picking up momentum with each episode now. It doesn't look like the viewers are there though. It is OK but I would be surprised if AMC gives it another year.

Last episode was great. It'll be interesting to see if they put the clunky but endearing UI back in now that Joe has seen the Mac.
