Sucks to get that close.
At least he knows he can hang with players like Rafa, and should probably beat him.

Nothing to be ashamed of with that performance, honestly. He was the better player in the 5th. Could have been up 3-0, instead was down 0-3 and surprisingly to me never got another good look.

Well, rats. Congrats to Rafa, heck of a comeback by Shapo, really dug deep to force a 5th set, just couldn't quite reach the finish line tonight.

When he watches the film of this match, he is going to be sick to his stomach, because it was there for the taking but he just tried to be too perfect too many times and made too many errors as a result.

I meant more the energy than the injury. Like did he pound 3 red bulls in there or what lol. Ultimately Denis beat himself though. He missed so many shots in the last 7 games and Nadal really made no nice ones other than mixing up his serve nicely and just keeping the ball in play. But it's gotta be so tough after 4 hrs

Well, if so, he must be sick to his stomach a lot because you've just described the Denis experience.

One takeaway is that it's getting commonplace to see Canadians (both male and female) making deep runs in grand slam tourneys. That's pretty cool.

And that they can do this and still have obvious places where they can get better... imagine this match if just Denis's backhand slice was 20% more effective. And that's one of about 5 things that need to improve.

Well Rafa might as well go get #21 now as Felix is in tough against Medvedev.

Yeah, I thought the pre-match probabilities that had Denis as a 28% chance to win weren't far off here and he outperformed that. But I'd give Felix about 5% against this version of Medvedev.
I wouldn't mind Rafa getting 21, that would be a nice outcome, though I wouldn't bother watching that final.

Shapo making headlines by complaining that Nadal gets preferential treatment from the umpires.
Quote:
"I respect everything that Rafa has done, and I think he's an unbelievable player. But, you know, there's got to be some boundaries, some rules set," Shapovalov said. "It's just so frustrating as a player. You feel like you're not just playing against the player; you're playing against the umpires, you're playing against so much more."
|
True or not, this is a bad look and certainly will not benefit him moving forward.

There was a similar storyline (as far as set scores are concerned) in the Berrettini - Monfils match, Berrettini won the first two sets, Monfils won the next two, and then Berrettini took set 5 6-2 setting up a Nadal - Berrettini semi-final.

Certainly not going to be easy for Rafa to break Berrettini, it's going to be another close match. Hopefully Rafa has something left, yesterday's match reminded me of the US Open quarter against Thiem that went 5. Rafa had to retire next match against Delpo.

is there any official guide for the fancy stats they show post-match? I vaguely associate the stuff like Work Rate and Hitting Load with physical exertion, but I'm not even totally sure if higher number is worse or better for each stat.
in the spirit of CHL though I might be tempted to change my name to HittingLoadTennisTour.
