Flames running out of time after back-to-back shellackings

This is the moment where it certainly feels like the bottom has all but officially dropped out of the Calgary Flames’ playoff hopes.

A shellacking can do that to a group, especially when it’s the second in as many days.

Following a month-long stretch where the Flames went 10-4 despite trading three of their core players, the lads wrapped up a three-game Eastern roadie with a thud.

A 7-2 spanking in Carolina Sunday followed a 5-1 loss to the Panthers one day earlier.

Turbulence or not, the flight home must have been rough, especially considering the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights come calling this week.

How slim are the Calgary Flames playoff hopes?

If you’re a new reader – and if so, welcome! – you might have noticed two things about the Calgary Flames over the course of the 2023-24 so far. First, they sure have moved a lot of good roster players for futures. Second, they sure do seem fixated on making the playoffs.
Given the in-season departures of four prominent Flames, how slim are their playoff hopes as we head into the homestretch of the season?

FlamesNation Mailbag: Sifting through the aftermath of the trade deadline

I’ve pondered this elsewhere on the site, and I keep coming back to this question: what’s a fair long-term deal for Oliver Kylington look like? All indications are that Kylington and the Flames really value their relationship, and so I don’t think there would be much nervousness over doing a short-term deal that gives them a bit more runway to figure out what Kylington’s NHL potential is and what a long-term would look like.
I would venture to guess that a one-year deal at about the same $2.75 million cap hit would make sense for everybody involved, and then they would have a more fulsome conversation in January 2025 about a more lengthy deal.

I expect a better effort than those road games, but the reality is that the talent is pretty gutted out of this team now. It's okay to lose, but show up and compete hard.

This is a rough 3 game stretch. Back to back vs Carolina and Florida, than fly home across the country to play an Avalanche team that last played on Friday. Even a loaded up team might get clobbered in this one.

But our man Cheese always gives us a great game day thread.

3 in 4 nights, cross-continent travel? This could be really awful. Go Flames! You can do this.

It honestly seems like the Flames wear their alternates more than their regular uniforms. Aren't they supposed to be for like ten games a year, not twenty-five?

Av is a similar team like the Canes. Looks like a monkey show to me.

0-4 in the first period.

Flames will have a power play goal in the 3rd.

That’s a win.

Curious to see if Okhotiuk plays. More curious to see if Kelly can say it.

13 games with Blasty. I think it seems like more because they tend to wear them in bunches.

I am just happy if they don't get beat down in embarrassing fashion.

NHL scoring leader is in town, and he has a bit more than twice the points than the Flames top point producer. I can't remember when was the last time I saw that. I am sure it has happened not that long ago, but I must have not paid attention. MacKinnon is having one heck of a season, and he does everything. Him and Kucherov have been the best players in the world. I wonder if he ends up freaking out at Backlund again.
