The conclusion to Death of X hits this week - maybe we'll find out what Cyclops did finally.

Also, the penultimate issue of Civil War II. This event lost a lot of steam due to unforeseen delays. I'm still looking forward to seeing how it wraps up though.

Also, Image Comics just released their solicitations for February releases and reminded me of the new series coming out from Greg Rucka (writer of Lazarus, Black Magick, Wonder Woman) and Leandro Fernandez (The Discipline, Deadpool, Punisher: MAX) called The Old Guard. The solicitation describes the book as follows:
Quote:
THE OLD GUARD, the story of old soldiers who never die…and yet cannot seem to fade away.

Trapped in an immortality without explanation, Andromache of Scythia—“Andy”—and her comrades ply their trade for those who can find—and afford—their services. But in the 21st century, immortality is a hard secret to keep, and when you live long enough, you learn that there are many fates worse than death.

Also, Love is Love, a publication from IDW Publishing with the support of DC Comics, is out today. All work in the 144 page special issue is donated, and the proceeds of the issue will to Equality Florida's fund that is in place to benefit the victims and survivors, and their families, of the Orlando Pulse shooting. Worth picking up for that alone.

So Marvel is changing it's policy/practice on the digital codes it includes with its comics. In a nutshell, in the past the digital code included with the comic allowed the buyer to redeem the code for a digital copy of the same comic. Going forward, there will be three codes included in a physical book - but they will be for issues Marvel chooses to highlight or promote, and buyers will not got a digital copy of the physical book that was purchased.

Been a month or so between random news items, so here's a few updates from the world of comics, as well as on series I'm reading.

Marvel's next big event on the horizon is Secret Empire, wherein Captain America's schemes as a secret agent for Hyrdra come to fruition, and most of the Marvel heroes come together to punch each other senseless yet again. It's unfortunate that this story is coming out in 2017 against the backdrop of all the political shenanigans in the USA, but from what I've read (and heard from others) the Hydra Cap story unfolding in the monthly Captain America comics is quite good. This event should serve as a capstone to that story and set up the new status quo to take us to the next big Marvel event that will shake the universe to its very core in 1-4 months.

Here's some art and upcoming covers to do with Secret Empire. The event starts this June, with a lead in issue being made available of Free Comic Book Day.

Spoiler!

Canadian Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on books such as Sex Criminals, Howard the Duck, Jughead, and most recently Star-Lord, was just announced to be launching a new Spider-Man book with artist Adam Kubert. Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man, will launch this June with an issue also coming out on Free Comic Book Day. Here's an article about it and an interview with Chip from Entertainment Weekly.

Free Comic Book Day 2017 is on May 6. Here's a list of free comics that have been announced so far.

As for comics I've recently started reading, a standout is Giant Days from Boom! Studios by John Allison and Max Sarin. It's a slice of life story about three women going to college in the UK and the trials and tribulations they and their circle of friends encounter. It's charming and fun and a joy to read.

I also recently started reading the webcomic Cura Te Epsum by Neal Bailey and Dexter Wee. It's a trippy multiverse hopping tale where a character is recruited by alternate versions of himself and dragged into a war with an evil version of himself who is killing all of the versions he comes across in every reality. As you might guess from the title, it's a good self examination and reflection on depression, knowing yourself, how to live with your past, etc. etc. etc. Powerful, page turning stuff - the art by Dexter Wee is truly impressive IMO. As a webcomic, it is published a page at a time, and it's been going for years. Last I looked it's over 800 pages, and I'm into about the 400th or so right now.

That's all I've got for now.

I love that Coates has been able to cause such a stir with Black Panther to warrant another book, and that he was able to get Roxanne Gay to come in and write a spinoff to boot.

Just a heads up, Amazon.com is having an insane sale on Marvel digital comics. This works for us in Canada. You can link your Comixology account and your purchases will also show up there.

Ok so Marvel Unlimited is free for a month with the promo code HOME.

I need some direction as I never got into comics, I'm 40 now, and I have no idea where to start. Someone please guide me or give me a starting point as I don't deal well with so many choices and being overwhelmed.
