I suppose a plus living there would be popping over to Waterton for lunch.
Probably would be a whole tank of gas from my place on 0 Ave downtown to 212.

We make fun of people who talk about how close Airdrie is to Calgary, but we're basically at the point where you can buy a house in Airdrie that's physically closer to downtown Calgary than some places that are actually inside the city limits.

We're planning a trip down there sometime this summer so we're stockpiling preserves and interviewing Sherpas.

Just for fun, I just checked on Google Maps and you're right - from the south end of Ricardo Ranch to 4th ave and 4th st downtown, it's ~23.75km; to the south side of Airdrie from the same spot downtown, it's ~22.75. Heck, to the south part of Legacy, where it's already built up, it's ~22.25

So should we just annex Airdrie, or would the facelift cost too much to bring it up to our standards?

no but we need to build more houses in Balzac, so more people can have an address with Ballsack in it.

When I lived in Chestermere and worked downtown, I had a shorter commute than several of my co-workers who lived in the deep SW and SE

This is the best I could find.
The purple squares are the 8 that are being recommended by the city admin.

I have it on good authority that Ditches are the way to go.

A couple new closings not mentioned yet:
Looks like both locations of Ceilis are closing. I still remember when the 1st one opened in Penny Lane in about what - 2000 - and it was the hottest patio in town to be at. It does sounds like something new will go into the 4th street place, and the Rooftop is still there.
https://dailyhive.com/calgary/ceilis...algary-closing
I also saw that the Toys R Us in Market Mall is closing. Rumor has it that Decathalon is going into the space. If so, I can't imagine the other sporting goods tenants there are happy about it, especially Mountain Warehouse and maybe Sport Chek as they already occupy the low end of that market.
I did visit a Decathalon yesterday, and I'd describe it as the Ikea of sporting goods. Had everything from Karate gi's to yoga mats to treadmills. House brand stuff is incredibly cheap, but as you move up in quality is gets back on par with either costco or even MEC (on sale). Good example was a synthetic sleeping bag that was $85 - which ironically is what I just paid for one at MEC this week. Anything Coleman is priced comparably to most other places.
Bikes weren't cheap, and had crap parts to boot. Wouldn't reccommend.

Although Ceili's is closing it's really just a rebranding, going to renovate and reopen in a couple months, apparently irish pub theme has run it's course

Ceili's went waaay downhill after Penny Lane, some of the food was barely edible and the servers were aweful. Certainly not worth the prices.

Decathlon bikes are actually a bit of a bargain in line with what bikes and bike parts are costing today from bike shops. Also they have inventory which many places still struggle with during and post-covid.
Road bike with carbon fork and Sora drive train/disc brakes - gravel friendly fork and frame for $1000 is under what you would pay for other brands.
Decathlon lives with Sportchek and Sporting Life in Southcenter so it does seem to work. They serve slightly different segments. Sportchek does serve the lower end but with branded products. Mountain Warehousebwill be the one that will suffer the most I think.
Sad to see TRU go.

I mentioned this in the restaurant thread but I biked to the new Calgary Farmers Market by C.O.P.
From the outside, it looks really big but internally it's pretty much a modern building reminding me of a food court. No interesting twists and turns like Crossroads, etc. or any character. The food was pretty bad and overpriced from all the food court vendors.
Lots of meat and sausage vendors, a few unopened stalls. Nothing to write home about yet.
