NHL referee Garret Rank qualifies for US open.
The single hardest golf tournament to play and qualify for in the world IIRC.
Quote:
NHL referee and part-time golfer Garrett Rank is living his dream.
Rank, who officiated 76 NHL games this season, qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday, shooting back-to-back 71s for a 2-under par at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Georgia.
NHL ref Daniel O'Rourke caddied for Rank.
|
No kidding.
Quote:
"Was next to the best players in the world on the ice. ... Next week I get to play with the best golfers in the world," he told Sportsnet. "It's a pretty cool life I'm living right now."

The real question is can he hit the long ball? Otherwise he's just slacking, being an NHL ref and golf pro. Need to get a 3rd, maybe 4th sport in there.

He gets to live the dream and i'm sure that's all he's thinking about right now. It won't really matter where he finishes, just the fact that he made it and gets to rub shoulders with some of golfs greats. An experience that will last a lifetime.

Well good for him, but being able to ref an NHL game ranks higher in my opinion than any golf level. Golf is what happens waiting for Hockey to come back.

I think you are paying golf a huge disservice with a comment like that... golf has a far more storied past than most sports let alone hockey and is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone at any level but is extremely hard to be good at. For an amature like this to qualify and with two under par rounds like this is nothing short of phenomenal and is easily as comparable as reffing at the nhl level if not more so for him because he’s competing on a personal level with the best in the game at a major tournament.
I’ve been golfing for years and have watched forever and my best is an 87.. it’s the game we play for life and is extremely rewarding... for a guy like him to come into the US open qualifier and shoot back to back 71’s is incredible. Excited for him and I will be looking for him this week; really hope he makes the cut.

You're right, and if golf was a person I would owe an apology. I guess I do not put a lot of weight on the history of an activity as hockey is relatively new compared to most.
Quite possibly this achievement ranks (pun) higher for Mr. Rank than his career level. To myself however, it would be a footnote among what must be some great hockey stories.

Sorry but playing professional golf is definitely more impressive than officiating hockey.
Edit: didn’t read your second post. I see where you’re coming from and would agree that the hockey stories and stuff would be better.

Came for jokes about how impressive it is for a blind man to make the US Open. Leaving disappointed.

He's not really playing professional golf though.
He qualified for a tournament that has open qualifying spots that amateur players / club pros take every year.
Its a cool story but every year the US open qualifiers produce cool stories.

This explains why NHL officiating is so terrible, hes got his mind on a whole other game!

For a brief moment when I saw the title I thought it was about tennis and I was looking forward to seeing him argue calls like McEnroe.

There's a great anecdote about a blind man who kept challenging Arnold Palmer to a round of golf. Arnie kept demurring, but the blind guy persisted. Finally, Arnie agreed, and said "alright, name the time and place and we'll play". The blind guy says "Pebble Beach. Midnight."

Haha. That reminds me of this joke:
A doctor, a lawyer, and an engineer are playing a round of golf together. The group in front of them is playing very slow so they complain to the Marshall. He responds that these golfers are blind firemen who lost their sight saving the club house from a fire so they are allowed to play for free. The doctor says: oh no that is horrible, please give them my phone number I will see if there is anything I can do to help their suffering. The lawyer says: wow what a tragedy, please give them my phone number I will see if there is anything I can do to get them financial compensation. The engineer says: why don't they play at night?

Well, currently sitting 2nd last after his first round (still lots of people to go and lots haven't started). +13. Still has a 9 stroke lead on last place though.

I heard that course is insanely hard though.
Look at that leaderboard. Tons of plus scores.

Right now only 2 players have a worse score...but it may be the toughest US open in many many years. The course is eating up the best in the world.
