Have to assume everyone but Smith was given one.

Carroll too please.
Even though we give qo can see some guys bailing for Europe. Can see shinkaruk doing that as he’s far behind on depth chart.
Interesting to see how they handle Poirier. Does he get another shot?

There is a reason they are desperate to get rid of him.
5 years left at $7.25M, he's 31 and has completely trended downwards.
Even if he could somehow manage a 50 point season playing with Johnny and Monny, it would be an exception and you'd still be stuck with a declining player for 4 more years.
Huge risk, and limited (and likely short lived) reward.

Poirier most likely gets another shot. Guy has wheels and finished last year very strong. Went through his problems and sought out help.
I still think he becomes a solid third or forth liner when all is said and done.

One thing we are lacking is toughness/physicality
From watching the teams play in the playoffs, every team that advanced further, they all played physical (could lay some mean body checks) with speed
Ferlie used to be the physical force... now he’s gone...
Who do we have? Hathaway... hamonic... Bennett
we got some soft players like Brodie, kulak, johnny, etc
We need more big bodies
What do u think

You cannot have players where hitting people is the only thing they can do. IMO you do not need to be the ones initiating all the contact, but just cannot have the whole team shy away from it. I think we are fine with what we have, the game is changing to speed and skill. (though I love the physical games)

Gio is physical, Tkachuk is physical. Kulak can be - I've seen it. Brouwer and Lazar hit. Hanifin played more physically this year than before.

I think that while we will miss Ferly because he hit with a purpose (that purpose being creating turnovers while rarely taking penalties), physicality is not necessary to win the Cup. The Bruins and Lightning were two teams I thought had as good a chance as anyone to win it all last year and will be among the favorites to win it next year, and I don't think they were as physical as last year's Flames. In previous years teams that are near the bottom of the league in physical categories - Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit have all taken home the big prize. Physicality is a means to an end - it's not the end itself and compete + skill are more important than just size or physicality. A waterbug player like Mangiapane who can also contribute offensively is far more valuable than a so-called physical player who is wasting roster space like Hathaway.

Appears that the Blackhawks will not tender a QO to Anthony Duclair.

Interesting. I see the Habs signing him but Maloney is familiar with him so could see the Flames buying low

Have to think there's a chance that we're going to see a number of Frk situations where players aren't qualified, but still re-signed.

He's a left shot, but there's reason to believe he's worth taking a stab at:

With Maloney in Calgary now there may be interest in Duclair - he was the one who brought him to Phoenix.

May be an interesting pick up, however I suspect he is a head case given his movement from team to team as well. I think the Flames are trying to get less players that are headcases, so I am not sure I see that as a fit personally.

In his column on FlamesNation today, Pike said he's been informed the Flames will not offer a contract to Matt Stajan. Not necessarily a surprise, but now we know.

A guy I work with lives on the Stajan's street, he said their house is up for sale too.

I would like a guy like Reaves or Martin for the regular season to deal with meatheads like Kassian and Lucic. I think in those regular season games, the Flames do get pushed around a bit and that was even with Ferland around.
However, for the playoffs, i think the Flames have more than enough toughness. Bennett, Tkachuk, Brouwer, Hathaway and Hamonic are all guys who can handle the rough stuff.
Maybe the Flames re-sign Dalton Prout as a 8th defenseman. That guy is one of the toughest customers in the league. They do need a depth guy on the right side defense as after Andersson, there is nothing else.
