Looking for suggestions. My Bro in Law is turning 50 in 2 weeks. He enjoys Macallan Gold. I want to buy him a similar palate bottle in the $150-$200 range when bottles go on sale around NYE.
Appreciate your thoughts.

From the Barrel is great. They have it from time to time at Costco for ~$50. Fantastic pickup.
I've recently started drinking Nirasaki. Around $44 at Co-op, and it's one of the best sub-$100 bottles of Japanese whiskey, IMO.

Maybe get him a Glengoyne 15 or 18? I just had a 15 and it's a lot like Mac 15 triple cask.

It's slightly odd though in the sense that for a Balvenie, I felt like it had very little spice and smoke.

To add to my earlier comment, the rum cask Balvenie mentioned earlier doesn't really feel like a true Scotch. The flavour of rum is strong enough that it's obvious that it has flavors of a completely different spirit. It is tasty and unique though. A fun bottle to enjoy as a change of pace. I'm just mentioning this because a few friends of mine tried it and agreed it was interesting, but absolutely not something that fulfills a Scotch craving for them.
On a relatively random note, I don't get the obsession with aging in oak (American or otherwise). One reviewer I stumbled upon seemed to put it best, "There is a flavour, chemically but organic, reminiscent of glue or something sappy." Blegh.

I generally scan this thread but I’ve never been tempted to buy one of the touted Scotches, but I want to give that one a try. I hope it’s not peaty; I don’t care for peaty. I may put it on my Christmas list.

Balvenie isn't peaty at all, but like people have said, the Caribbean cask gives it a sweet, rummy feel.
I always suggest a Glenmoragnie Nectar D'or as a first good single malt to try and spend money on, it's balanced. KWM has a 4 bottle gift pack of different Glenmoragnie for like 50 bucks (the bottles are like 3 pours each, so bigger than airline size) and it's a great option to try out. The Lasanta in there is very sherried and sweet as hell.
Oh, and what am I drinking right now? I picked up a 15 yr peated, single cask, rum finished Glen Scotia over in the UK and if they ever get it over here, I'd knock over a grandmother to get to it...damn.

Absolutely no hint of peat or smoke for the Balvenie Rum cask.

Coop has some good deals this week. I may or may not have picked up The Dalmore 12 and Lagavulin 8. They also had a Dalmore15, I think, for $68. The Balvenie Caribbean Cask is also $85.

What do people think of the glenfarclas? I'm not a scotch drinker. I drink mainly IPA's and some red wine from time to time. I heard the glenfarclas was good to get into scotch drinking.

Glenfarclas is fine, but I don't find it to be too spectacular. However, if you're just getting into scotch, it's a good introductory one. Sample a MacAllan 12 or 15 as a base scotch. It satisfies almost any palette AFAIK.
Not necessarily on topic, but my wife bought me an advent scotch calendar, and so far, it's been amazing. A unique single malt from Sweden has been the highlight, but everything has been very tasty so far. Nothing younger than 18 years, which is very nice. I'll provide updates if I stumble upon anything noteworthy.

Is it this one?

It’s pretty good.
As for Glenfarclas, it totally depends on the one your drinking. There’s a lot of different ages and each one combined with its casting is going to be different. I’ve had a bunch of their scotches and they can be excellent, but usually on the older end.
I go for scotches with certain characteristics, like sherry cask.

There is a sherry note to glenfarclas that is pleasing. There is also a big jump in quality once you get to the 15 year. They are pretty reasonably priced on the 15 if you shop around a bit. Walk by the scotch wall to check prices when you go in to buy your ipas.
