Currently house hunting and I was annoyed at not being able to see some newer houses on Google maps because the satellite imagery is too old. That site has a full satellite map of Calgary from 2019 and almost all years back to the 90's. It even has aerial maps from the 70's, 40's, and 20's. Ended up wasting a good hour just playing with the layers seeing how the city has changed
Ya, I found that a few years ago, and discovered the concrete pilings on my driveway used to hold a car port!

That satellite shot managed to capture three of Westjet's 787's at the gates along with 2 of Air Canada's. The Avgeek in me likes that.

It's gotten really bad now. Embarrassing even. For years Calgary was ranked as one of, if not the cleanest city in the world. That has gone downhill substantially. I know it's every citizens responsibility to pick up after themselves but reality doesn't always work that way.

There must have been some major cuts to city clean up and well being because it's really apparent now in some areas.

This is a massive rabbit hole. I knew of the 1924 imagery a whiole back, which was cool enough, but now all of these additional layers? There goes my productivity today.

Things like Baker Park, and the Baker Sanatorium that stood there before. You can see clearly on modern images where the tree lines were, but being able to overlay the old buildings is cool.

Plus seeing what used to be on/near where my house is, my folks' house, my old schools, etc. is so neat.

Mount Royal University / Lincoln Park air base / Currie Barracks is another cool area.

So much to see. I have always enjoyed history and also maps/cartography, so this is so good, yet soooo bad.

Seeing where old rail lines were (and to some extend early roads) helps shed light on features you see today. Like why a new road or development looks the way it does even though it may not make sense visually at first glance. or why parks, green spaces etc. are where they are. And what those straight lines on a map that have nothing along them are.

Or when you look at somewhere like Princes Island Park, and realize that precious wetland they want to protect form an LRT bridge was really just a gravel bar, and isn't that old.

The river has changed drastically over the years.

I kind of miss the airplanes in the old Chinook Centre food court.

The 2013 images were taken later in the year, so toggling between 2012 and 2013 really shows how much gravel was moved around by the flood. I'm sure that more subtle changes can be found in previous years, but 2012-2013 is quite interesting.

Those old airplanes (and the renovation that brought them) still seem quite "new" to me. But nope, that was around 2000 and I'm now old apparently. I will also use "I live in the North" as an excuse for not noticing how long they were there for.

Fixed, unless you have to go upstairs, past the crappy theatre it is the new food court.

I can't remember the name of the Soup place that was there, but I had buddies that worked there, we ate for free.

I remember when the Chinook movie theatre was where the food courts are now. The one that showed Raiders of the Lost Ark for 90 straight weeks.

Yep, a lot of Calgary's cleanliness was tied to being an economic power with some downturns. Now we're going to see more crime, less cleaning etc. Basically less everything good and more everything bad. Unfortunate new reality.

As we approach 1.5 million people with a decimated economy we'll likely see some pretty crazy murder stats (by Canadian standards) in the coming decade. Wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing years with 40+ homicides.

We're so ****in' far from being a trendsetter in a policy that will be forced upon every country eventually. The earlier each country implements UBI the better off they'll likely be. It maybe even reach a point where countries fall so far economically that they require universal basic income but can no longer afford to do it. It'll get ugly.

Does Canada seem like a country that will be on the forefront of something like that? Not a chance, imo. We're completely stupid by every measure, economically these days.
