I really hope that David goes to the Bundesliga. That league seems perfect for him to take the next step and continue his development. The Bundesliga has really committed to playing young players and giving them every opportunity to be in the starting XI in recent years

However if it’s true that Barcelona is calling, how can you say no to that?

He said in an interview last month he wants to go to the premier league, guardian had arsenal, spurs, man city, and chelsea interested, he most importantly said he wouldnt want to go somewhere and sit in the bench

Going to barca would be a horrible move for his career, he would be a sub at best right now. So many young players stunt their development by making a move too fast or to a club too big. He needs playing time.

I'm not sure he'd start for any of those Premier League teams. Personally, I'd love to see him play for Arsenal, but it's not a great move for him. The Bundesliga seems like the right stepping stone for him. Play a couple seasons there and then look to move to a bigger club as a starter.

Sounds like it's bye bye to the Hex. Qualifying format likely to change as a result of Coronavirus impacting the number of FIFA windows..

Hilariously CONCACAF. Make a qualifying format so stubbornly bad that only a global pandemic can change it.

And the most Canada thing ever would be to be given this "second chance" and then lay a giant turd on some dusty pitch in Central America somewhere. I do feel that Canada actually deserves a better fate this cycle and were victims to a bush league format, so this could be some vindication.

And I'm not ruling out CONCACAF just drawing three countries from a hat containing only three countries.

Wouldn't true CONCACAF be flipping a 2 headed coin?

I would do it the Asian qualifying way. A double hex

Get down to 12 teams. Two groups of 6. Group winners go to the World Cup. Two second place teams playoff for the 3rd spot. Loser goes to Intercontinental.

That said, I did want to see the crappy format and Canada winning the minnows tournament.

The USA and Mexico would never allow a format where they dont play against each other. Those big games make all the money.

Take that same format and add a 1a v. 1b home-and-home to take the top seed and bragging rights while the 2a v. 2b playoff is happening. Then at least Mexico and USA have a very good chance of meeting, assuming they both finish tops. And if they don't - no complaining!

I agree with this point. In fact Japan and South Korea have not met in WCQ since 1998 and they've qualified for all of them.

There's not enough time to play down 6 teams and have a full 10 match HEX, or else they would have kept this old/new/dumb system.

The Australia Socceroos FB page is showing game two of the 1994 World Cup qualifying vs Canada tonight.

I don’t remember the series at the time but it looks like a typical Canadian disaster. In the first game in Edmonton they are up a man early only to find themselves trailing at halftime on an own goal before squeezing out a 2-1 win. Then in game 2 in Sydney they are in a position to advance tied 1-1 before conceding in the 76th minute and losing on penalties. Good times!

The winner went on to play Argentina so likely no Cup anyways but the Aussies did put up a fight only losing 2-1 on aggregate.

Yeah they choked this away. Game in Edmonton was lazy and should've been more early.

Never looked confident back in Aus, and to make things worse, right after the Aid goal, TSN's feed went out, so you only had someone on the phone relaying back audio.

Think they would've had a shot at Argentina. Game here would've been in late fall iirc. Argentina was a mess that lead up.

But, prior to all this, they had a chance to beat Mexico in Toronto and qualify they day, and went up 1-0, and lost 2-1.

CONCACAF's new World Cup Qualifying format for 2022 has been released. The Hex is gone, replaced with an 8 team qualifying group.

Quote:
The format for World Cup qualifying, as outlined by Concacaf, is as follows:

- First round: 30 teams (ranked 6-35 in the current FIFA world rankings) divided into six groups. Team will play each other once. Winners from each group move on.
- Second round: Six teams are divided into three home-and-away ties. Winners move on.
- Final round: Eight-team group stage featuring 1-5 ranked teams (Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Honduras) and three winners from the second round. Each team will play every other team in their group twice, home and away.
So basically, to make the World Cup, Canada needs to:
- Top their 4 game first round group against various minnows.
- Win a two legged playoff against another group winner to make the final round.
- Either come top 3 in their 14 game final group, or place 4th, and win the Intercontinental playoff.

Looks better than the old format. For what it's worth we are seeded as the top team in Group B for the first round (which is actually 4 games, 2 home and 2 away) and if we win the group we play the top team in Group E which is the group where Haiti is seeded.

That makes sense because El Salvador as the 6th ranked team going to the hex was bunk. Now at least El Salvador and Canada are on equal footing.

Pot Two, avoid Guatemala and Nicaragua

Pot Two:
12. Antigua and Barbuda
13. Guatemala
14. Saint Kitts & Nevis
15. Suriname
16. Nicaragua
17. Dominican Republic

The break they frankly needed that they better capitalize on. Though if they cant get even into the NewHex, Fifa would be right to consider pulling Canada out of 2026 hosting.

It's a really weak cycle for costa rica and honduras

Really no excuse to not qualify

Having to defeat Haiti to get to "The Ocho" would be the perfect second chance for Herdman after the Gold Cup collapse. In a two legged tie, I think Canada should be the clear favourites. They can run up the score in the home leg and aim for a draw in Haiti.

Haiti are a good side, but with some of the good young talent in attack Canada should be able to dispatch them easily. As long as Davies isn't played at LB...
