Well, to be fair, I believe Serivalli said ‘he thinks’. He could be wrong. Or, the Flames might do that but they also might have a limit to what they would spend and on whom. In other words, they might not be looking at whoever they can get their hands on.
Nothings happened yet, so no point in assuming the worst.
On another note, just listening to the PDOcast and the topic of Greg Cronin referring to Mason McTavish as a ‘third liner with some offensive upside’ publicity came up. I had not heard that before. If McTavish is available or the Ducks are even considering it, if I’m Conroy, I’m all over that. There are not many pieces I would not include in a trade for McTavish.
That said, I suspect the ducks will come to their senses and fire Cronin before trading McTavish. Regardless, seems like the relationship might be a bit strained.

I'll say it again: almost all teams that got 150+ points from the defense, made the playoffs. And almost all the teams that didn't get 150+ points, didn't.
Really high correlation. Not suggesting cause and effect - don't need to. The correlation is a strong indicator and predictor on its own.

IMO, they just moved closer to the cup, not further away (and even if not this year, in future years for sure)

Yeah, Necas isn't chopped liver either. 55 points (compared to Rantanen at 65) and not even a top line regular in Carolina. Play him with Mackinnon and he adds a bunch more. Plus $5.6M+ in cap room. If they can move Middetlsdtat and get a better 2C I think they are super tough to beat.

Well, getting a point from anyone necessarily means a goal was created. I don't know if having them come from D instead of F has any more value than if the player was born on Thursday instead of Monday.
Also tricky because the value is in the creation of a goal, which can spawn anywhere from 1-3 points and yield identical value to the outcome of a game.

Flames lack scoring, Flames are missing the transition game and offense from their D, Flames want to upgrade their depth with something better than the Miromanov/Bean/Hanley/Barrie rotation.

It will be interesting to see what Necas and Ranatanen do for their respective teams, for the rest of the season.
What do people think the spread will be between the two, for the remaining games? The current spread of 10, suggests a spread of 8, the rest of the way.
I'll take the under on 8.

That is one player that would 100% not fit the culture that the team is trying to cement in place in my opinion.

Creating goals regardless of their origin is fairly indicative of making the playoffs:
2023/24: 14 of top 16
2022/23: 13 of top 16
2021/22: 14 of top 16
2020/21: 13 of top 16

If he was a pending UFA, maybe. But two more years after this one at $10M? Yuk.
The only way I would consider taking Karlsson would be if they gave us a pick.

What things have they done that suggest they are short sighted?

Insiders like Seravelli and Weekes are hilarious. Always trying to be first to break the news, and drum up views with cryptic tweets. Of course Seravelli needed to delete multiple tweets yesterday because he was wrong.
It's hard to believe anything that those 2 post. It's funny how a bunch of people online were speculating Crosby until another insider had to come out and shut down those rumors.

I doubt the Flames have any interest but the reason you do the Karlsson trade is the hope in two years you can flip him for more than he cost you. Plus whatever benefit he would give a guy like Parekh. The cap space is irrelevant for the flames, they are more likely to struggle to reach the cap floor than they are likely to have cap problems.

Poor Monahan. Blue Jackets updated his injury status and he's down another 6 to 8 weeks with a wrist injury.
We all know how many times he's had his wrists worked on. This may be it for hockey for him .
