Flames The Captain Discussion

Who do you think will be the next eventual Captain of the Calgary Flames?

- Longest tenured Flame and savvy vet in Backlund?
- Our best player in Huberdeau who is highly respected and was a long-time A in Florida?
- Toughest SOB in the locker room who leads by example inTanev?
- Monahan if he makes an enormous resurgence?
- Other

Who do ya got, and when?

Lindholm

On most nights last season he was the Flames most complete player at both ends of the ice.

Always puts in a solid effort and to me leads by example.

I think you've hit on the main candidates: Backlund, Tanev and Huberdeau.

If we had to choose, for me it is between Backlund and Lindholm. I think Backlund is a great choice, looking back at the Edmonton series, Backlund really showed up... I remember gaining a lot of respect for him.

Backlund 100%

Huberdeau, Monahan, Tanev as alts. Andersson the first fill-in if an existing alternate gets hurt.

Rasmus Andersson

Tanev, Backs, and Lindholm only have 2 years left in their deals.

Lucic.

Tanev isn’t great with the media.

My 5 candidates for a letter would be:

Backlund, Tanev, Lindholm, Coleman, Huberdeau.

Maybe Weegar in a year or two assuming he's still with us.

Backlund's earned the right but there are a few good candidates.

I think we’re sleeping on Andersson and Mangiapane in these conversations.

Those two are competitive as hell and I think could be good candidates.

I agree that Backlund should be the captain.

Immensely competitive, has faced adversity early in his career and is great in the community.

Tanev, Lindholm and Huberdeau as the Assistant captains.

Backlund showed us in the playoffs that he's ready for the 'C'

It's Huberdeau. I dont know how it can be justified any other way.

The second that pen hit the contract the Flames became his team. He's the face, he's the guy. He's a leader.

No slight to Backs but I believe he's not long for this roster.

Tanev would he my 2nd vote.

I think it will be Backlund or Tanev, and would be equally fine with either. Backlund is probably more likely

Let Huby do this own thing without having to worry being the captain.

Arguments for Backlund:
- Longest-serving Flame. Has played with the last two Flames captains in the last two eras of Flames hockey. Has seen it all.
- Got rave reviews from teammates for how he captained Sweden to Gold at the 2018 Worlds
- Does the most community work out of anyone on the team
- IMO our best player in the Edmonton series

Arguments for Tanev:
- Excellent at providing leadership and direction, especially for young players that he is paired with
- Seems to be universally respected by players and coaches, very consistent and never seems to have an off-night
- Plays a more important role on the team than Backlund (shutdown D vs middle six centre)
