Guy slid down the depth chart to become a healthy scratch.

Bringing over more mature European free agents seems to be more miss than hit. David Wolf, Zagidullin, Ehliz, etc. All good players from the respective leagues that just didn't make the transition.

Still, a good strategy for depth players. Costs very little to roll the dice.

too bad; he arrived in camp in great shape, best among prospects, then got injured and missed camp and 3+ months. First game back, he tweaks his knee or groin

I wonder if we still qualify him and let him play a year back in Europe.

Legend has it if you say Scorchman three times in the mirror Scorch will appear and start shuffling behind you.

Defenceman, Greg Moro (SaiPa, Finland) and backup goalie, Adam Werner (Malmo, Sweden) have both also signed to play in Europe next season.

Remains to be seen if the Flames offer Daniil Chechelev a Entry Level Contract now that Werner is out of the organization.

Chechelev was (more or less) okay on an otherwise mediocre ECHL team.

I like Cheche, still think there's something in there. ECHL is a dog's breakfast league, goalies need consistency. Give him a full AHL season.

Chechelev was backing up Wolf towards the end of the season and into the playoffs when Werner was called up to the Flames third stringer. This was over Shortridge or Greenfield, so perhaps that bodes well.

Don’t we have longer then the two years to sign him because he was drafted out of Russia?

Yes. If the plan is for him to be Wolf's backup next season (and potentially starter if Wolf gets a call-up at some point), they'll likely still want to sign him to an NHL ELC.

I think the organization has to, at some point, exhibit a show of faith in the kid's development. Last year's ECHL placement was a late off-season move and I wouldn't expect him to sign onto another one year deal.

And the idea of a 21-year-old backing up a 20-year-old, neither of whom had a pro track record to speak of, would've been a bad plan.

My understanding was that they weren't expecting Chechelev to come over to North America last year, but he had found himself without a team in Russia. That may not be the case this year.

Eetu Tuulola has signed with Ilves of the Finnish League.

Quote:
Tuulola agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Finnish club Tampere Ilves on Thursday.

Tuulola spent the last three seasons playing in the minors for AHL Stockton after being selected by the Flames in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft. If Calgary opts to offer the 24-year-old winger a qualifying offer, it would retain his NHL rights but he won't be playing for the club this season regardless.
