I have no problem getting rid of the Forever Flame crap and retiring Nieuwendyk and MacInnis numbers but besides Fleury there's no one worthy of retirement in my eyes.

Fleury has his demons so I don't even think 14 would be retired for a very long time.

I can't see any of the older guys getting retired this far after their retirement. Just seems... weird.

I think they would have also done Kipper by now if they were going too

So the only 2 candidate are Fleury and Gio

Honestly, I don't think Gio did enough to be retired.

So it's down to Fleury.

The only way I could ever see him getting it retired is if he pulled a complete 180, apologized for his past behaviors and comments (which I don't think he is sorry for . or needs to even be) and it became a heartwarming finally raising his jersey redemption story

So I don't think anyone gets their jersey retired anytime soon.

This thread is really lacking some #28.

That said I'm cool with a two tiered retired/honoured system and keeping retirement very exclusive.

I think #14 voided his chance by not being an ambassador for the organization. And #5 needs to put in some Calgary community services to jump passed the honoured level and into the retirement level.

A guy like #34 who skipped town the minute he was done just didn't leave the retirement legacy here. And the other guys did too much on other teams.

Always boggles my mind how Vernon was the 2nd player to get retired, especially with some great players from his own era still not up there. But that's a good point about it more being due to honouring his born and raised / entire hockey career until 1994 being in Calgary. Still feels like it's more of a lifetime achievement award type of retirement which is a little forced and cheesy, but I digress.

Chopper absolutely has to be up there though. I'd only put Lanny and Iggy above him in over 40 years of Calgary Flames history. That's really gotta get done one of these years, especially now that the hard feelings between him and the organization have finally been smoothed over it seems.

Uhhhh... I'll debate Giordano's inclusion based on level of play (i.e. Norris Trophy), but the guy's won slews of humanitarian awards (including international ones like the Muhammad Ali Award) for community service.

I actually meant hanging around and continuing to be part of the community post career. Retirements are for franchise players and community icons.

Not to deminish anything that happened while he was here but if he doesn't continue to contribute to Calgary in the future, and was never really the "franchise" guy, then even with his resume I'd rather see him honoured, retirement is overused by the vast majority of teams

I guess we'll see after his playing days are done.

Iginla, BTW, really hasn't done much locally post-career either.

I think 34 and 5 will get retired. As for MacInnis, I think forever a Flame is good enough. He already has his number retired in St.Louis and even has a statue outside the arena.

I'm in no rush to retire 2 and 25. I'm fine with how it was handled.

14 deserves to have his jersey retired for being the face of the franchise and such a fan favorite but I understand why it isn't. There is a reconciliation waiting to happen there but sadly doesn't seem likely.

34 would be cool. Love that guy.

5 just had no playoff success whatsoever. He probably deserves it and seems like such a great guy but for some reason, I'm not convinced.

I love that the Flames have so few retired numbers. My vote would be to handle banners the same way. Hang banners for Stanley Cups, Conference championship and President's Trophy. Everything else can be recognized in the concourse area or something.

I didn’t think to add the year he won to the finalist column. I'll change it as that makes more sense.

I can't think of a strong case for Reggie.

Great defensive defenseman and staple of our backend for years. But I don't think he's at he same level as any of the names on that list, including Gio.

Also Iggy hasn't lived in Calgary since 2013. Heck, I think he was living in the states until just last year, wasn't he? What community work has he being doing for us post retirement?

We are too young of a franchise to have so many numbers retired.

Clubs should have a ring of honour (like what the Canucks have) for long time greats or long serving members, like Backlund, Regehr, Giordano, etc.

Retirements are for very special players. So special that they were often considered the best at their position league wide for multiple years, or have become iconic in some other way.

The Flames should only have three retired shirts: #12, #2, #9.

Flames that should be in a ring of honour type of program: #25, #34, #5, #14, #30, #11, #28, potentially #23 if he recovers and sticks around. Johnny gets no such legacy as he left early.

Giordano's a shoo-in.
Kiprusoff is probably a scheduling challenge; he's pretty reclusive these days, spending his time largely out of the limelight.

Again, we're likely the stingiest in the entire league besides the Penguins

We came into the league in 1972 and currently only have 3 numbers retired. Below are the number of retired jersey's franchises from 1968-1994 have (including numbers re-issued due to relocation):

1967-68

Flyers - 6
Penguins - 2
Blues - 8
North Stars/Stars - 6
Kings - 7

1970-71

Canucks - 6
Sabres - 8

1972-73

Islanders - 8

1974-75

Capitals - 4
Kansas City/Colorado/NJ - 5

1979-80

Oilers - 8
Whales/Hurricanes - 6
Jets/Coyotes - 3
Nordiques/Avalanche - 10

1991-92

Sharks - 1

1992-93

Senators - 3
Lightning - 2

1993-94

Panthers - 3
Ducks - 3

Giordano, the guy who didn't win one playoff series in the Flames lineup is not getting his jersey retired.

Neither is bat#### crazy Theo

honestly I highly doubt anyone does for a LONG time
