Default RIP Vin Scully

Simply the best announcer baseball has ever produced IMO.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, whose dulcet tones provided the soundtrack of summer while entertaining and informing Dodgers fans in Brooklyn and Los Angeles for 67 years, died Tuesday night, the team said. He was 94.

there's that overused expression about listening to someone read the phonebook, but pretty sure I'd happily pass an afternoon on a deck with a cold beer listening to Vin Scully read the phone book

When NBC had national baseball games on Saturday afternoons in the 80s, they had Scully and Joe Garogiola. Even as a young lad I always thought that Scully could do games solo because he was that interesting, and becuase I didn't know anything about him otherwise, no idea that's what he did as his regular pbp.

I posted these in the Celebrity Deaths thread the other night...

One of the common comments I've seen since his death was how good he was at letting a moment breathe.

In the first clip, from "the Mets win it" until he speaks again is almost two minutes (and there might be an edit in there too). Not many would have the restraint to just let the noise in the stadium tell the story.

the more I contemplate this man's career the more amazing it seems

so he calls Don Larsen's perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956- at this point he's already about 6 or 7 years into his career

35 years later he calls Dennis Martinez' perfect game , against the Dodgers who have since long moved to LA of course, Martinez pitching for a Canadian team (for the first 20 years of his career there were no MLB teams in Canada ...of course he had also called a Koufax perfect game in between

he then calls his final MLB game 25 years after the Martinez game
