Former Blue Jays great Roy Halladay dies in plane crash
https://www.thescore.com/news/1416683
Being talked about in the other sports forum in a Blue Jays off season thread, but figured he's a pretty big name in Canadian sports.
Passed away after crashing his new plane. Really sad as he had been going crazy over that plane on twitter, calling it his dream when he bought it.
Quote:
Former two-time Cy Young award winner Roy Halladay died Tuesday after his small seaplane crashed in the Gulf of Mexico. He was 40.
Halladay was the only person on-board the aircraft, the Pasco County Sheriff's office said at an afternoon news conference.

Wow. That is tragic. Doc was one of my favorites during his tenure with the Jays -- a true ace.

Pitcher Roy Halladay, who won two Cy Young awards and more than 200 major league baseball games during a stellar career, died Tuesday in a plane crash off the Florida coast, authorities said.
Halladay, 40, was the only person on the two-seater plane that crashed just off Holiday, on Florida's Gulf coast north of the Tampa Bay area, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.
The single-engine plane, an Icon A5, crashed in very shallow water and was found upside down.
According to the Pasco County Sheriff's office, a 911 call came in at 12:06 p.m. ET saying that a small plane had crashed.

So sad. I loved watching him pitch when I was younger.
Rest in peace.

Horrible. Just awful.
So sad for his family, wife and two young kids.
My all time fav player from any team in any sport. He was one of the greatest players and
role models to ever put on an MLB uniform. I always knew how lucky the Jays were to have him. Tragic loss for his family, baseball, the bluejays, the phillies, and the entire sporting world.
Thanks for the autograph Doc.

As far as the plane goes, reading on Reddit that only seven have been delivered thus far - and three have now crashed. The company that makes them has orders for nearly 2000 more.

Wow, and RIP. How awful.
And the Icon A5?
I've been following that plane's development since it was announced years ago. They had to get special FAA approval for something relating to the stall characteristics if I recall, and received it. Their website claimed at one point how safe it would be and that you wouldn't even need a full pilot's license to fly it. It was a plane with folding wings you could tow behind your car. Could do land and water landings.
Pre-orders were to take years to fulfil and even created a secondary market for them where they went for way more than list if you could get Icon to approve. I suggested to my wife that if the money ever became available we should buy one some day.
EDIT: It was also landable on water if the engine failed and had a chute if you were over land. What went wrong?

Not the kind of plane I would have envisioned a pro athlete buying.
Given the thing could float is it safe to assume that something really went wrong in that he could not glide into the water for a landing?

The A5 was designed with a 'spin resistant' wing and achieved FAR Part 23 certification with this airfoil. The A5 is amphibious and is intended to be flown off water or land. By some accounts the A5 can be tricky to land on water and several Hulls have already suffered heavy damage due to hard landings. Looking at the wreckage it appears that this may have been the case with Roy's accident IMO. The wings are separated but everything is mostly intact. The NTSB will likely be able to pin point the exact cause.
Icon's legendary chief pilot/engineer Jon Karkow was killed in an A5 crash back in May which was attributed to pilot error. General Aviation can be terribly unforgiving, even to the best.

This is tragic. Childhood memories of watching him. He was an amazing pitcher and a even better person.
